I lived on the MS Gulf Coast for a few years in the early-mid 90's. Living down there was like a long, long vacation. We loved the area & went to New Orleans at least once a month, usually more. I think it's one of the greatest cities on the planet.
The geography on the map is mixed up. Dallas is farther west and maybe a little north. Jacksonville is farther east and a bit more south--Miami is definitely out of place, as is Boston (above Toronto!) and Edmonton. I saw those things, but didn't think to comment on them, since I didn't take the labels so literally. Regardless, my town wouldn't be anywhere on the map, unless it was as a blip on the trip to NOLA. I used to live on Royal Street, but not in the Quarter--I lived between the Marigny and the Bywater. All the same, it was great. I could walk downtown in about 15 minutes and could take the bus if I didn't feel like walking. After I got off the bus, I could take the streetcar any number of places--although my favorite trip was out to Tulane University where I'd do research for work or out to Audubon Park. NOLA is a great city, with all kinds of wonderful things to do. Even just sitting in Jackson Square was very neat. I once saw two horse-drawn carriages go to the cathedral there on the same day. One was open and white and pulled by white horses, for a wedding. The second was closed, black, draped in crepe, and drawn by black horses. For a funeral, of course. It seemed pretty significant at the time.
Atlanta is an easy 200 mile drive nearly due north from Jacksonville. Dallas is at least 1000 miles west of the both of them. But somehow on Hypothetical World Tube Map you have to go from Jacksonville to Dallas and then to Atlanta. BTW, it also conveniently misses the 4th largest city in the US.
Now, even McDonalds is feeling the wrath of a Flea Bagger: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/11/0...n-mcdonalds-when-denied-free/?intcmp=trending
Attacking the person instead of addressing the issue is a sure sign of having no support for one's position or of having nothing to contribute to the conversation. Just because you don't like the source of some information does not mean that the information has no merit. However, if it truly has no merit, then why not just present evidence that it is biased or incorrect?
Once again the sad attempt to paint an entire movement as bad based on the activities of one person. A person, by the way, who was seen at the protests without any indication that he was a part of the protest.
Ok, what about this? The New York Post reported that the suspect is a protester, but that could not immediately be confirmed. So no proof whatsoever that this homeless guy had anything to do with the protesters or even sympathized with their cause but that didn't stop Fox from making the connection for their gullible viewership anyway. I just love Fox's justification for connecting this homeless guy to the protesters. "No one was hurt by Bezabeh, who has been seen hanging out with protesters in the occupied park, police sources said." Fox might as well be called GOP T.V.
I think we just have to accept the fact that the RWers will take any act of violence or vandalism that they can in any way connect directly or peripherally to even just one of the thousands of protestors across the world and use it to paint the entire OWS as a dangerous mob. It's all they've got right now. I think that they are frustrated that there is not a defined leadership that they can attack or a defined organizational structure or a focused set of goals. I think it's difficult for them to deal with nascent movements such as this that are in the process of figuring themselves out. If the Right had been in charge of something like this I have little doubt that it would have been organized like a military operation by now and all participants would be getting the talking points of the day with their morning coffee. For better or worse true grass roots movements aren't usually that.... Ummm... Under control.
There are just too many reports of violence, theft, sexual assaults, drug dealing, death, ect to be able to defend the OWS as anything other than a loose band of publicity seekers, radicals and Flea Baggers. The legit, passionate protesters were long ago taken over by the element we see now. Have you noticed how very few pandering politicians or Hollywood types are now being seen at the protests? What do they know that you do not?
It reminds me of the 60's. They did exactly the same thing to the anti-war activists. They are even using some of the same lines. "Get a hair cut! Get a job! Dirty hippie! The more things change the more things stay the same on the Right.
The difference now is people are saying "Stop the drug dealing" "Stop the sexual assaults" instead of "Get a hair cut! Get a job". Plus, they are calling for help from the mountain of student loan debt your industry duped them into.
They have probably realized that the OWS movement recognizes them for what they are. The OWS movement didn't jump up and give them a warm welcome so they didn't get the recognition they hoped for. In some ways, there really isn't a difference between a politician and an actor. They both craft illusions to gain popularity and wealth. The only REAL difference is that actors are honest about their motivations. See this is what really scares the politicians, the corporate apologists, the police and there rest of the people on that side. We really, really, really don't care about the traditional plays of power which have brought us to this spot. We are tired of the advertising crafted illusion that these people represent. We are actively seeking to avoid the "cult of personality" style of control because it doesn't serve the purpose of the people at large.
They certainly don't influence people like you. But then again, why would they even try? You should just be content to know that had you been around during the 60's, you would have been a full supporter of the travesty that was the Vietnam War while people like the OWS protesters were on the right side of the issue all along. Every generation has people like you. They cross their arms, stomp their feet, close their eyes and ears and never think for themselves and never stop spewing uninformed opinions. They are to ones that get left behind. Welcome to an unsolicited preview if your golden years. No charge!
See, now if you weren't so caught up in trying to "rumble" and would just put on your listening ears you wouldn't seem so angry & foolish. I have said on several ocassions that I understand what the OWSers are doing, especially those protesting your beloved student loan industry. And you are correct in your observation that I ceased listening when the Flea Baggers and their radical, violent extremists tookover. Can you tell me what these folks are trying to accomplish now? And if you can, how does violence, sexual assault, child trafficking, and drug dealing advance the movement?
The typical reply from the corporate apologists is that these people wouldn't even have the technology, the time, the freedom, the environment to protest if it hadn't been for corporations that produced the technology, capitalism that gave them the time to protest, and the protections this country affords them. I say BS! If those things were actually as a result of corporations/capitalism then they have provide the tools the protesters need to rectify a lot of injustices inadvertently and as with any great movement, these protesters are using the tools of their oppressors to bring them to justice. Cool!
