So what was the name of the team IQ? It's news to me. Sorry about the eye. Was it a puck or a stick? When I was in my early teens they made it mandatory for those under 18 to wear full face protection. My FIRST game with the new helmet on I caught a stick across the face. Left a big tape mark. Figured it would have broken my nose and decided I'd get used to face protection. At 18 my brother decided to go with just the eye protection and shortly thereafter spit a few teeth on the ice.
I'm not huge into hockey, or our area's role in it, so I had to look it up. I found this in a wiki: They say the team was called the Canadian Soo. After a bit more digging I found another wiki with this: So I dug a bit more and found this lol... The team apparently had four doctors as team members, one being Jack Gibson (of the IPHL). I should add that the site I got this from (listed third below) states Houghton as being "The Birthplace of Organized Professional Ice Hockey!"... and not the first team... so I may have mispoke. In my defense, I'm finding all the declarations of who did what first a bit confusing lol On that site it mentions "The Amphidrome (the "Drome")" being built by James R. Dee, the "father of American hockey". I'm pretty sure it's still there, but we call it "The Dee Stadium (The Dee)" now. Been there many times. I'm pretty sure it now houses a lot of the local hockey history, a hockey museum, in addition to hockey games, skating, and concerts. I found this interesting, not only since I graduated from the school, but for the anti-racism thing: Anyway, it looks like I misspoke. Houghton is apparently the birthplace of organized professional ice hockey. Whatever lol Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_hockey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_hockey http://www.cchockeyhistory.org/ It was a stick. 2nd grade gym. I walked to the Calumet hospital afterwards and eventually got sent downstate, where I spent months, then to another hospital up here in Hancock for another month or so. Brutal lol ...When I returned to school the next year (I passed the 2nd grade at home with supervision by a teacher) some kids were furious with me 'cause hockey had been cancelled in gym for that year. I told them to go *poof* themselves lol... I was never allowed in gym classes or stuff like that, though I occasionally snuck in anyway (How many people can say that? ) Not long after my return to school, masks were required and hockey was fine again so I didn't take too much grief over it for long, though I did learn how to use words like *poof* pretty well. And, like you and your brother's experiences, it's not such a bad thing. Anyway, if you're into hockey some of those links might interest you.
Cool stuff IQ. I'lll be checking it out for sure. I grew up and still live near Chicago. For some reason we loved hockey on the block I grew up on. Had a pond within real easy walking distance. My brother and I would pack lunches and basically spend Saturday and Sunday there as kids. We'd also be there before and after school. Just shooting pucks around if nothing else. Other kids on the block did as well. When we got older and our high school had a "hockey club" half the team came from our block. Ice hockey in the winter and street hockey in the summer. Great times for sure. Occasionally my brother and I would drop the gloves and duke it out. He's almost five years older than I am so I'd usually get my butt kicked. Funny thing was we'd punch it out even if we were on the same team. Great memories. Ain't that funny?
lol, yeah - I'm the youngest of seven, with three brothers... so I can relate lol Kids playing hockey on every other street is a given up here too, though I never played myself. I shoveled snow or worked paper routes, then built huge snow ramps and piles... then tunneled through them. Some of those tunnels/caves were massive and multi-roomed, multi-level complexes. Snow-ball wars were always fun. When my kid was younger I built him some pretty massive ones too. He even cooked marshmellows or roasted hotdogs or something with his mom in one, after she built a fire in it. I've built some that were roughly two-stories high, so we'd slide all day (after I was done shoveling, an almost daily, multi-houred job some years) and in later years we'd snowboard down the ramp. Some of those ramps, after months of dumping snow using 'em, were strong enough to hold the weight of a car lol. I visit my brothers from time to time. Two of 'em I know I can take... the other is about my size but gettin' old so I think I have the edge on him now lol (throws gloves off hands to the ground skates over to brother): "Let's do this!"
We had a girls hockey team in High School. I didn't know some people played it on ice, though. Oh, and the title of this thread is wrong...at least for a couple more days.
Girls playing hockey gives new meaning to the word "slap-shot"... (imagines girl's hockey game, as two opposing players get into it and begin slapping each other) .... (outloud): ....that's right, look into each other's eyes ...now kissssss.... ohhhh yeah... slap her again... ...What were you talking about again?
Right now my college man's team is only ranked 13th in the nation, but the women's team is ranked third. COMMENTS REMOVED BY ME BTW, we had no women's hockey while I was there, but we did finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the nation
That is an unnecessary and personal attack. Apologize, and don't do it again. If you refuse I will be forced to report this.
HAve you ever seen girls play field hockey? it is Dangerous to say the least and they have no protective gear to speak of (they can be violent as well LOL)
Sorry for not being more specific. I was not talking field hockey, but ice hockey. And, BTW, I doubt that one of us here "take a body check from those gals" - real seriously!
Having had the pleasure of watching the streatham storm ladies Ice Hockey team play I woudnt want to be body checked by one of them LOL
It's offensive to me on many levels, it's insulting both to me and women, it's not based in truth, and it's unecessary in Chatter. If this comment was made in a thread in Politics I'd feel differently, but here the comment is unwelcome. If you refuse to apologise you could at least have the decency to remove the comment. If you refuse to remove the comment, or cannot, within a day or two by yourself, I will ask an administrator to remove it. Why am I getting bent about it? Because I do not welcome that type of comment in this thread I created in Chatter, meant to be free from partisan snipes, especially any snide comments made by by you... because I don't like you. Your constant misquoting of Democratic comments, your deliberate misrepresenting of facts and failure to account for context, your unwillingness to behave in any congenial way towards anyone who does not share your extremism... all force me to form an opinon of you that has I deem unlikable. Either remove the offensive comment or I will ask an administrator to remove it. You should feel grateful I've decided not to report you directly. But don't confuse this alteration in my tone with a weakness on my view of the charge I am making against you, or a weakness in my determination to have it removed. What I ultimately want is to have the comment removed. Forcing an apology out of you is meaningless. Even if you somehow managed to make one (an extremely doubtful scenario) it would be weak and insignificant... just like the majority of your comments and opinions are. Leave the insults behind when you decide to post on a thread of mine here in Chatter. Good-natured ribbing is one thing, but for that to happen mutual respect has to present.
I'm kind of curious now rlm. Where did you go to college? As for women's hockey did anyone watch the last olympics? Supposedly these women don't hit. Yeah right. I thought it was funny when the Canadians won that some of the ladies' kids were on the ice with them. I mean my mom was a "hockey mom" but they REALLY have hockey moms! Clean your room or I'll knock your teeth out! - and she's capable of it.
Showing your age there man. MVP in the playoffs BEFORE getting Rookie of the Year if I'm not mistaken. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Stand up goalie all the way and one of the best. Or course I was watching Tony O as a youngster. Figured you either went to college out East or the upper Midwest. BTW I think his name is STILL Ken Dryden. Had to say it.
I don't hide my age anywhere. However, I was overseas for more of his hockey career, so I don't know too many specifics. But I did hear of one game in the AHL where he shut the other team out and faced 50 shots.
I am immensely offended that this thread about the best sport on the planet has been completely overrun with talk of ice skating. If the thread had devolved into a discussion of cheese, I could understand it. But this is completely unacceptable! TOUGH LIVE WITH IT HOCKEY RULES LOL
