I wish you and Moen would just get a room. Certainly the term "white" is archaic. Just as Moen correctly (imagine that!) pointed out earlier, "white" is not a race. But, if you think so, please define "white".
Those rich kids need to get a job and quit living off Daddy's money. I have worked hard but yet have been broke all of my life until I bought my first PC in 2000 and discovered the gambling mecca called Wall Street. I made a big bundle by market timing and have enough to retire without social security or anything else after 11 years, so I say leave Wall Street alone except for one minor change, ban short selling.
Not sure. But here are 2009 household numbers from Census.gov. No pretty graph but basically the same. Asian - $75027 White - $62545 Hispanic - $39730 Black - $38409 Personally, I think the following is reflective of a probable root cause of income disparity (again 2009 numbers from Census.gov). No High School - $21635 Some High School - $25604 High School Graduate - $39647 Some College - $48413 Associates Degree - $56789 Bachelors Degree - $75518 Masters Degree - $91660 Doctoral Degree - $120873 Maybe we should have a 'Tax the Educated' fiscal policy?
I think you misunderstood my comment. Despite what you say, both terms appear to be currently in use. As for white, I believe it is one of the the options on the racial monitoring section of bank loan applications. I do not claim to be able to define it and I made no claims as to how appropriate it is to use it.
Will Obama's hypocrisy never end? http://news.yahoo.com/obama-attacks-banks-while-raking-wall-street-dough-044804642.html
NO! Despite his multiple pledges, BO has made a common practice of recruiting Wall Street types & lobbyists into his administration and securing similar Wall Street positions for his supporters. Somehow this sleight-of-hand trick has been ignored by that element of the left that will defend anything & everything BO does.
Will you and rim be getting a room? He thinks the term white is racist and you think it is archaic. I can't even figure out why it would be offensive to anyone. As I pointed out the US Census uses the term. WHAT DO YOU TWO HAVE AGAINST A PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE TERM THE REST OF THE WORLD HAS NO PROBLEM WITH? Or do you just need a reason to argue?
Maybe this will help you to come to terms with what the rest of us already figured out. White Americans are people of the United States who are considered or consider themselves White. The United States Census Bureau defines White people as those "having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who reported “White” or wrote in entries such as Irish, German, Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner, Arab, or Polish." Like all official U.S. racial categories, "White" has a "Not Hispanic or Latino" and a "Hispanic or Latino" component, the latter consisting mostly of White Mexican Americans and white Cuban Americans. The term "Caucasian" is often used interchangeably with "White". German Americans (16.5%), Irish Americans (11.9%), English Americans (9.0%), Italian Americans (5.8%), Polish Americans (3.3%), French Americans (3.1%), Scottish Americans (1.9%), Dutch Americans (1.6%), Norwegian Americans (1.5%), and Swedish Americans (1.4%) constitute the ten largest White American ancestries. Sixty million Americans, one fifth of the total United States population, claim British ancestry. Whites constitute the majority, with 72.4% or 223,553,265 of the population in the 2010 United States Census.
Not trying to speak for anyone else but you seem to be using "white" as a pejorative, as if you believe the left can claim some moral highground in the diversity debate.
Now, you can't have it both ways, Moen. As you've so aptly pointed out previously, "white" is not a race. Why the Census Bureau is using such a discriminatory, prejudicial word is something you'll have to take up with them. You like to use the term "people of color" so perhaps the Census Bureau should take a cue from you and start using the term "people of no color" to describe persons of a lighter skin tone. But, even that is a prejudicial term since it discriminates based on skin color, so I would be against it. When will you stop defending the use of skin color as a discriminatory tool?
Because it is a catchall term. It basically means European but not exclusively. If you want the US Census to use the term people of color, you'll have to take it up with them.
Yeah, to my untrained eye there is not a huge difference between Polish festivals and German ones at least a far as food goes. Both are great, but the Polish food is maybe a little more Slavic. The Poles make some dynamite vodka too. Better than the Russian stuff. Japanese festivals are actually to my mind less fun than some of the others. Maybe familiarity breeds boredom, I don't know. But it's always interesting to sample the food. Most of the American Japanese have been here for generations and originally came from the impoverished countryside. The recipes that have been handed down are very regional and not necessarily what you get in Tokyo, which is what we know. It's kind of like a time capsule if that makes any sense. Modified somewhat by what was and is available here. FWIW we have a great taiko drum group here. I'll check youtube. There must be something. The best Pride as far as we are concerned is the one in Vancouver BC. It's something that the whole city gets in to. We've been to the San Francisco one a couple of times and never made it to the end of the parade. It's fun for about the first four hours LOL. You're right, I don't exactly associate Oklahoma with a vibrant and out gay community. But I'm always surprised. My firsthand knowledge of the country east of say Boise, Idaho is pretty limited. Chicago, kind of. And the major hubs. That's about it. Talk about OT.
Back to the "occupy" folks....apparently the fears about the movement being co-opted have come true. I was listening to NPR last night & some of their reports from the various protest locations. One "occupy" spokesman was lamenting the fact that an estimated 25-50% of the people were there for reasons unrelated to the protests (homeless, criminals. spectators, etc). Another commented on how few of the protesters were even registered to vote and how a union was "sponsoring" a food kiosk (a little to corporately-subjected for his taste). The best was the new name for the "movement".....the Flea Party (a takeoff on the Tea Party) due to the squalor & litter they have created.
I don't think large masses of people gathering in one place are ever going to make the area cleaner. That would defy logic. The Right-wing always seems to want to disparage Left-wing demonstrations as masses of dirty trash spewing people as if that will somehow turn the attention away from the issues. What was the issue during the Tea Party 9/12 demonstration? I don’t remember but here is the aftermath. You seem to have conveniently forgotten that the 9/12 organizers also organized a cleanup project that doubled as a fundraiser for various organizations. As for the Flea Party? Condoms, needles, trash & don't forget the police car the guy was caught taking a dump on.
