Let's not forget that Labor Day began because union members held hostage the Pullman Company which, for one thing, resulted in the interference of the delivery of the U.S. Mail. Union strikers set fire to buildings then threatened and attacked strikebreakers. Eventually, the strike resulted in the deaths of many strikers and extensive property damage.

Even though there are some on this forum who advocate violence by union members to obtain their demands, I hope we can all settle our differences peacefully. Labor Day was born from the ashes of violence, but let's not reignite those flames. Labor Day continues to this day as recognition for the workers of this country, union and non-union alike. Happy Labor Day everyone!!

No change in venue from the Special Olympics event.

When you finally came back with:

I find it hard to believe that you actually planned this out in advance. I believe that you simply can't follow the logical ebb and flow of a conversation since this is how any conversation ends up going with you. You clearly created this misunderstanding as anyone can see by the above sequence of posts. Instead of owning up to it or saying something like, "I can see where you might have believed I was still talking about the Special Olympics event when in fact I had switched to talking about the sit-in at the Capitol", you plod on insisting, without knowing, that I must not bother to read the linked article.

It seems to me, without ever having met you other than in this forum, that you have a fanatical need to never admit that you are wrong. I think it probably affects you to the point of irrational, illogical, mental contortions that come off as socially unbalanced to the people you argue with if not just pathological. Why don't you read the sequence of posts above again and tell me where I might have assumed what you were talking about.

Well, now, that just sounds like sour grapes. One would logically think that a Labor Council would like to show those Republicans what their little parade is all about. It would certainly give them a chance to show what hard working, even-tempered and fair-minded folks they really are. Or aren't.

Now go back and read post #14 and #15 where the discussion started and Takiji tried to say that the protesters had an excuse for doing what they did.

Rim, you posted a video, the title of which stated that union protestors disrupted the Special Olympics. After a simple google I found the complete story from a WI newspaper which quoted the spokesperson for the Special Olympics as saying that the protestors were not being disruptive at all. I'm inclined to believe her rather than the caption on the video. Beyond that I had nothing to say positive or negative regarding whatever else the protestors did that day or their behavior or what they were trying to accomplish. What you have been doing in post after post is setting up little Takiji straw men for yourself and then knocking them down. Maybe you could start a new thread in which you put words in my mouth and then refute me.

Even going back another two posts and I find both of you were talking about the Special Olympics event. You even said, "easily excuses their trespassing, disorderly conduct, and the conduct at the special Olympics"

I came to the logical conclusion that you were talking about the Special Olympics event based on your post and the fact that Takiji was taking about the Special Olympics event. Read it and tell me why I would think otherwise. The earlier in the day event was used by YOU as something you felt excused the trespassing, disorderly conduct and the conduct AT the Special Olympics [event]. Maybe you meant something different but you really worded it badly. You should put more thought into the way you phrase your posts in the future.

So let's see if I've got this straight. One day a bunch of unionists got together and said, "Hey boys, let's stir things up a little and hold the Pullman Company hostage. We can set fire to buildings and threaten strike breakers and a good time will be had by all." But unfortunately many deaths resulted and that kind of killed the buzz.

I think that maybe a little context would be good.

I certainly agree with the sentiments here, but there are days when I'm not optimistic.

Too bad the left has morphed celebrating the worker into celebrating the unions....but I guess it shouldn't be a surprise since the unions have evolved into nothing more than a fundraising arm for far left causes. How is is that requiring workers to join the unions & continue paying the mandatory dues isn't viewed as wrong by liberals?

No I suffer from word blindness so some times my spelling is off but you do get the gist, I use to play both snooker/billiards and 8 ball and was rather good at it, allways came home with money LOL Quite often taking money off cockey yanks who thought that they could play the game LOL

Ohhh ayeee... to be a cocky yank.... (sighs)... and yeah, you'd probably crush me in it lol ...The tables are huge compared to ours (I have played on one once) and the side pockets are merciless. I can usually sink a ball into a side pocket at harsh angles, but on a snooker table anything above 45 degrees is tough.

...I'll stay here and not bother to try to take on a Brit at his home game... saves me money lol

Not quite. I simply wanted to give a little input behind the creation of Labor Day in the hope that people would educate themselves on the topic. Some people have absolutely no idea how Labor Day started; they simply enjoy it as another day off. There's nothing wrong with that I suppose, but it's good to be educated.

Bingo! There has been some pro-union vitriol on this forum previously that you've missed that advocated violence. I'll never agree to violence as the answer. I'm glad you're optimistic!

I understand your opinion, but have to disagree. IMO, sometimes violence is necessary, especially to protect yourself or others from harm.

A lot of the labor strikes that became violent started with the murders of strikers and their families. Homes were set on fire to intimidate workers who had previously stared down their bosses rifles and refused to submit. I'd get violent too if my neighbor, his wife, his children... were brutally murdered by thugs working for the "big boss" in town.
