Mom Tries To Teach Kids Value Of Saving, Kids Learn Lesson About Bank Fees Instead - The Consumerist Unbelievable. If you don't move your checking and savings accounts out of Bank of America, you're really an idiot.
Yea, and the lesson there is that BofA only does the right thing when embarrassed on national television.
BTW, I should say I'm not in favor of teaching kids that the best way to save is in cash deposits. I'd recommend Krugerrands instead.
To me it looks like mom dropped the ball too, and worse than the bank. She obviously wasn't paying enough attention to the accounts. She should have caught this right away, but didn't notice anything unusual for years. She wasn't checking the monthly statements and wasn't showing her kids how the money was earning interest. If I was one of the kids, the lesson learned would be "Don't listen to mom about savings accounts." lol
Skip the Krugerands. Dealers buy them for much less. Gold Eagles get the better premium come sell time. Of course they have a higher premium at buy. I would avoid BofA and Chase like the plague (and do). I bank locally.
Those aren't Freddie Krugerrands are they? The kind that messes with your dreams? ...(laughs)... never mind lol
Now that's funny Craig! Of course they do. I just prefer to keep my money more local. If I have a question I can talk to a real person without having to be on hold for an hour to talk to someone in India that can't answer my question. Chase is a great example. I pay my mortgage ahead of time. Not long ago they decided to apply my payment to "escrow" because that's what they do if you get ahead. I didn't tell them to and actually you have to check a box to tell them to this My wife took care of it. It only took about a week and included phone calls to clueless people in other countries. Scary thing is my wife was in the mortgage business for 25 years.
I think it is crazy that the bank was charging this. But you are right that the mom should of been able to see this. Did she not get a monthly statement from the showing that the money was being taken out? Or ever get online to see what the balance of the accounts were.
