BBC News - Georgia's 'secret' arsenic village

I was browsing recent articles and came upon this one about a former arsenic mining town. I decided to publish it here since I also live in a former mining area (known mostly for it's copper and iron, and a nickel-sulfide mine is currently under consideration).

While mines are a boon to the country as a whole, and provides an abundance of jobs, there are aspects of mining that people tend to ignore. Pollution and waste products generated by these mines affect local populations short and long-term health.

The article here, while focusing on arsenic, is also about the failure of local, state, and federal governments to decrease the health issues relating to the various substances companies dump into the environment.

A quote form the article (it makes my blood boil:mad:):

"Dr Archil Chirakadze, head of the scientific research centre at Saint Andrew the First-Called University of the Patriarchy of Georgia, says the valley must be decontaminated. But the state cannot afford to, so telling parents is of little use."

:mad:The idea that since there isn't any money allocated to do anything about the contamination, people living with the threat shouldn't be told is ludicrous! Inform the (deleted) public about public (deleted) dangers, (deleted)!!!... pardon my 'deletions'... it just makes me so angry that bureaucrats and scientists have agreed to keep the locals uninformed about such a dangerous issue.

    Ok...done rating...:p...lol
