The Government Shutdown (or Why We Will Never Get Out Of This Mess...)

The government was going to spend $3,830,000,000,000 in FY11.

The Democrats are wanting to spend $3,797,000,000,000 instead.

The Republicans are wanting to spend $3,769,000,000,000 instead.

So, we are really talking about shutting the government down because we can't decide whether to cut spending by .86% or 1.59%. Basically, they are arguing over cuts amounting to 3/4ths of 1% of overall spending...and failing to agree.

Or, looking at it another way, we are arguing over whether our deficit for this year should be $1,339,000,000,000 or $1,367,000,000,000.

Anyone really think these people will be able to do anything at all about the national debt problem in this country when they can't agree on this tiny amount of spending cuts?

This kind of thing is childish. At the 11th hour they'll all come to an agrrement. I guess there are alot of drama queens in Washington.

I think what is funny about this whole situation is the way Republicans can't comment on the process without assigning blame as if they learned from the 1990's that what is most important is who is blamed for the shutdown. Never mind the economic consequences or the impact on people's lives or our soldiers, what matters is who gets the blame for the shutdown. The base of the Right will blame the Democrats. The base of the Left will blame the Republicans. The rest of the country will just shake their heads at both sides.
What I'd like to know is what exactly has the Right given up in this budget battle? I know the things the Left has given up. Perhaps someone can list exactly what the Republicans have conceded in this process. Which Republican pet programs have been cut?

Let me see now. The dips had control of both houses and the presidency and did not pass a budget and allowed the reps no, zero nada say in passing any of their (rep's) pet projects, but it is now the reps who are stall the process and give up none of their projects (that the dip would not give them). Interesting point of view there, moen

So you are saying that because one side did or did not do something then it is ok for the other to do the same? you are talking about something that will affect the lives of millions of Americans here and not some schoolyard game!

If you are trying to talk to me, you might reference who that would be and then learn how to read what was written.

Your use of pejoratives and the fact that you can't name a single thing the Republicans have given up tells me all that I need to hear from you. Funny though, I seem to remember the Republicans getting their extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans under the Democratic congress. Even funnier is that I seem to remember an entire party of obstructionist A-holes blocking everything put forth by the Democrats for two straight years even things they were originally for. Funny, I remember the Republicans pushing for and de-funding ACORN, blocking appointments, and inserting over 100 of their ideas in the health care reform legislation before they voted against it. That’s off the top of my head. They don’t count because?????
Their entire focus since winning a majority in the House is to attack women, investigate, point fingers, read the Constitution, have a shorter work day, and nothing related to jobs.

And you need to learn manners, it reads like you think it is ok for them to play childish games with the future of your country

I guess Harry Reid has promised to block any GOP attempt to secure funding for our military and BO has pledged to veto any bill that funds our military. These guys sure are some greta Americans, aren't they?
If a new budget isn't passed, the blame lies solely of the left. Pelosi should be prosecuted for the lies she's spreading & Schumer should be disciplined for his instructions to fellow lefties to label everything the Repubs do as "extreme" as a way to influence the lemmings on the left.

My "I guess" was intended to be rueful not a measure of uncertainty, but I think you knew that, right? And I apologize if my transposing of 2 letters in a word caused you any concern....I get a little fat fingered at times when typing on the Blackberry.
I always find it amusing when one can't argue the content they try to nitpick the minutia. Please tell your leaders not to withhold wages from our military personnel!!!!!

Arent there a couple of add ons to that bill? I mean its not solely a bill to pay the military, right? Were you waving the flag when you posted this? Watching jets fly over with a lump in your throat?

I'll defer to you on the issue of a lump in the throat but I will oppose any party, any politician who expresses a willingness to withhold pay from our military people.
