Third of Russians think sun spins round Earth: poll
    10 hours ago

MOSCOW — Does the sun revolve around the Earth? One in every three Russians thinks so, a spokeswoman for state pollster VsTIOM said on Friday.

In a survey released this week, 32 percent of Russians believed the Earth was the center of the Solar system; 55 percent that all radioactivity is man-made; and 29 percent that the first humans lived when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

"It's really quite amazing," spokeswoman Olga Kamenchuk said of the survey that polled 1,600 people across Russia's regions in January, with a 3.4-percent margin of error.

"All of them (the questions) were absolutely obvious... the data speaks of the low levels of education in the country."

However, people tend to forget what they have been taught at school if it is not part of daily use, she added: "I wonder whether our colleagues in other countries would find any different."

The study also found that women were more likely than men to believe the scientific fallacies.

That is really too bad they are not educated better. But then if they do not have the proper education, it is easy to see why they may think that.

Americans don't do much better. In a poll a couple years ago, 21% of Americans also thought the sun revolved around the earth. I think it's not so much that they aren't educated (I think everybody learns in primary school that the earth revolves around the sun), but more that the average person has no interest in science and what they learned in school isn't retained. It might be much the same thing in Russia.

Are ya gonna post a link to the poll, or are we supposed to just take your word for it? If it is true, I blame drugs and alcohol. Gotta go now, the ice in my drink is melting.

Wow, you're hard to please. Why isn't the original poster held to the same high standards on the Russian study? Are you a birther too? Tell you what, I'll bring Dr. Miller to your front door so he can hand you his original data himself.

Up until about a week or so ago*, Russians also classified Beer as a food. Maybe there is a correlation there... ;)

I know the OP is full of crap, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt. But you did infact post an article rather than the actual study. And if the article contained no problems, I probably wouldn't have commented. There was a sentence in the article that indicated that most people don't know that Strontium 90 is a radioactive isotope which is a by product of nuclear reactors and nuclear bomb testing. Agreed, but that said, I think a very high percentage of the population understands that nuclear activity creates radioactive byproducts which are hazardous to your health. All I am saying is that 20% of people thinking the earth is the center of the Universe seems extraordinarily high to me, and I would like to know what the actual question was that created that statistic.

BTW, If you bring a Dr. Miller to my door, it better be the guy who created Miller High Life and he better have some with him. Cheers!

I think the percentage is all that high in either country given the number of religious zealots preaching nonsense and the attacks on education system in this country.

I agree that the framing of the question would be a factor. But honestly, I would expect anybody, regardless of how the question is asked, to know that the earth goes around the sun!

You cant just say things that are true in here, pk. You need to prove it. So dont take it personal. Even if it is personal.

I don't think I'm the one taking something personal here.

No. But just wait. If you have an opinion that is different than someone else's;..well you'll see.

Well I certainly am not taking anything personally. I am here just trolling around for a while. Craig is also a troll, but too much of a snob to admit it.
