If you had the option of choosing which sex your child would be, could you bring yourself to do this? I really do not think that I could. I would not care if it were a boy or a girl as long as it lived a happy healthy life.
There are serious ethical issues with "designer babies" - I don't think people should be able to artificially select the gender of their babies without a good reason (personal preference not being a good reason!) However we chose to find out the gender of both our babies before they were born. We wanted to be able to prepare for them well in advance (clothes, wall colors etc.) and we figured it was still a surprise when we found out!
Glad that you agree with us. But could you tell me what you may think a good reason is? Right off hand I am thinking of none.
I was thinking if there were a good medical reason, such as if the parents knew that there was a good chance that if they had a boy that he would inherit a serious gender specific genetic condition from his parents. I don't know that there is such a thing, but I didn't want to rule it or any similar scenario out entirely.
I don't like to rule anything out, because real life is not black and white - there are always shades of grey, and each case has to be considered on its own. The circumstances and context of every situation should be taken into consideration when deciding what is "right" or "fair". Deciding important issues like this with black and white absolutes can lead to trouble.
YOu are very right PK. I totally agree with you there. If there is some reason for it that is one thing. But to just say I want a girl and have no valid reason is wrong.
NEVER! (laughs) Before my son was born a nurse was doing an ultrasound on my gf and asked if we wanted to know if it was a boy or girl. Although both of us immediately said "No!", it was really already too late. Just by asking I knew it was a boy, but in case my gf didn't catch that I didn't mention it to her.
We found out the gender of both our kids as soon as we could. Only because we wanted to know what color to paint the bedrooms, what kind of clothes to buy, etc. beforehand. I guess we're too practical for our own good =)
