AUSTIN, Texas — A judge ordered former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to serve three years in prison Monday for his role in a scheme to illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.
The sentence comes after a jury in November convicted DeLay on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The Republican who represented the Houston area was once one of the most powerful people in U.S. politics, ascending to the No. 2 job in the House of Representatives. During a several-minute statement to the judge prior to sentencing, DeLay repeated his longstanding claims that the prosecution was politically motivated and that he never intended to break the law.
"I can't be remorseful for something I don't think I did," DeLay said.
Senior Judge Pat Priest sentenced him to the three-year term on the conspiracy charge. He also sentenced him to five years in prison on the money laundering charge but allowed DeLay to accept 10 years of probation instead of more prison time.
DeLay was immediately taken into custody, but Priest granted a request from his attorneys that he be released on a $10,000 bond pending appeal once he is processed at the county jail. Prosecutors said it could mean DeLay will be free for months or even years as his appeal makes it through the Texas court system.

He is unremorseful to the end and would probably do the same thing if he had it to do all over again. Go ahead and defend him if you must but the reality is that nobody else's indiscretions alleviate or justify his corrupt behaviors.

 

I don't think anyone's going to defend Tom Delay just like I heard no one defending Bill Clinton after he was convicted of obstruction of justice or William Jefferson after he was convicted of accepting bribery money and stuffing it in his freezer. I agree with what you said about nobody else's indiscretions justifying corrupt behaviors. People need to accept the responsibility of their own corrupt behavior and pay the consequences whether they're a Majority Leader, a Congressman, a President or anyone for that matter.

If he's guilty he should be convicted.

A good start. Maybe we can snag some more of the Bush/Cheney crowd soon. Put one or two in jail, maybe they'll start singin'. One can only hope for such justice.

 

If Bush was guilty of anything the BO admin has had 2 years (not to mention Dim & Lib support) to bring a case against him.

 

This dude's out on bail pending appeal already. I guess he'll appeal for the next decade or two while he walks around free. I guess Bush and Cheney will have to wait. I'm shocked.

I didn't follow it that closely but I guess he is.

 

He was guilty of violating the judges interpretation of the law. The federal courts agreed with DeLay's interpretation and refused to prosecute. My guess is that when it is over, his conviction will be overturned when it is all over and done for. BTW, that is just a guess and I am not saying that I could begin to back that up legally.

 

Of course he will not spend a day in jail. He's republican. He's already paid everybody he needs to. My guess is some housekeeper turned judge somewhere will spring him permanently. He'll probably be the next republican candidate for President too. The right tends to embrace law evaders. It's good "business" too. All the hallmarks of the party of extraction.

Didnt he admit that he was unaware he was doing anything wrong? So you think his conviction will ghet overtuned by appeal?
