I think that cell phones shouldn't be banned for truck and bus drivers. I don't think we should discriminate against someone just because they drive a truck. However, I believe that the trucking companies should be allowed to decide whether or not they want to permit their truckers to use cell phones while driving or not.
Looks like the disinformation specialists are doing their work. Another important matter to shift the focus and keep the cups shuffling.
Banning things usually isn't a great idea, in my eyes. Just make the consequences for crashes and injuries and deaths where cell phone use is involved much stiffer. With cell phones, it is pretty easy to determine whether a call was being made during an accident or not.
Like drunk drivers, I would not be surprised if the offending person is injured less than the unsuspecting people who get hit. I was talking about cell phone records being subpoenaed for their ensuing trial for manslaughter or reckless endangerment or what have you.
Here's an idea. Pay the poor slobs driving 18 hours a decent wage, and hey, cut their hours down to something decent too...like 8 hours? Oh yeah....that cuts into the corporate champagne inventory.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most truck drivers self-employed? And aren't those who aren't paid pretty well? I thought I had heard, during the big spike in gas prices, the average annual salary for a truck driver was around $60k. And doesn't the DOT already place a limit on the number of hours a driver can drive during a day? And aren't drivers required to keep logs to verify that? I guess tomc's blind hatred as led him away from facts once again?
I do not think that it should be banned from them having a cell phone, it should just be banned for them to use them while in operation.
