Is anyone on here for this? I think that if you kill you should have your life ended as well. I know that we should not kill, but if you kill, you should know that this could happen to you, so you must not value your life. What do you think?

My views on the death penalty have changed over the years (as have my views on a lot of things) as I have become more and more concerned with state power and individual liberties. I used to be very much in favor of the death penalty.

But, in recent years, I have leaned more and more towards (actual - not what we have now) Life Imprisonment Without Parole for murder and serious predatory behavior. It would accomplish the same thing as far as ensuring the person does not continue their criminal behavior. However, life imprisonment is certainly more reversible in case of a mistake, intentional or unintentional, by the state in a conviction. The revenge factor is certainly greater with the death penalty but is that really a good thing? And, while there may be some deterrence to the death penalty, after reading a lot of studies, I am not convinced it is that high (except for the person who is put to death, of course. It certainly deters them. ;)).

Yes if they are locked up then they will never do it again. But look at many of the prisons today. The prisoners have better meals to eat than many people do, they are kept warm, they get to exercise and have outdoor time. Life is pretty good for them. Is this really fair?

Welll I would hardly call been locked up with others of the same type been easy, do you perhaps advocate that they shoudnt be fed, clothed or kept warm? as for the death penalty it has it's plus's as well as it's negatives The worry is of course that it turns out you have killed a innocent person Then does the death penalty actualy deter? how many murders were commited in states with theis penalty in force last year?
Perhaps if it were made public knowladge that if you commit murder you will spend the rest of your life in solitery with no chance of parole, minimum contact with the outside world etc that might have some effect

The only problem with actual solitary is that when you put someone into solitary, you can be assured that fairly quickly you will get an insane person out the other end - which is harder and more dangerous for the guards and staff whenever they do have to move them for whatever reason. On the other hand, a lot of them are probably already crazy going in so it may not matter. lol

I am not saying that they should not be fed, it is not fair though that they eat better than many other people who are free. And yes you have to clothe them.
I do agree that if the death penalty is not given then they should have solitary confinement with little contact. And they should never have visitors either.

Well said. I too have gone down that road.

Oh, and life imprisonment tends to be cheaper in the long term than the process to execute someone. Paying for food and the like in the State Pen is cheaper than paying for some lawyer in the mandatory appeals process that is years (sometimes decades) long.

Really, that is just crazy. But that is on a topic all of its own.

Stu I did say they woudnt ever get out LOL so dont have to worry about letting crazies out As for moving them tazers work quite well (cattle prods) and if we turn the lights off except for 10 to 20 mins a day that will also help keep them docile

If locking them up in solitary confinment makes them crazy.... good. They deserve to be crazy and be in a so called hell for killing someone!

I understand people's feelings of wrath and desire for revenge. But are you going to volunteer to be a prison guard? ;) I don't particularly give a crap about the murderer but I do know people who work in the prison system and it can be a tough enough job.

If somebody killed someone close to me, I'd want them dead. Simple. An eye for an eye. On the other hand (and there is another hand despite popular republican "black and white" thinking), there IS another hand.
There are times I can think of (and I won't give examples because everybody's circumstances are different (unless you're right wing and then everything is black and white, and in which case, you can just google the RNC handbook to decide who gets killed and who doesn't....or...rather how many zeros there are to the right of the decimal place to decide who is guilty and who isn't). You could also say it's "for the jury to decide". Well...juries can, have been, continue to be, and likely always will be, manipulated. In the case of wealth, many are insulated from being required to follow the law. Poor people, exactly the opposite. You can easily google those stats too. Wealth dictates justice most of the time. That's one problem. The other main one is we're not supposed to kill (if one believes in God)...and for those that don't, well, whatever they say goes, so, whatever morals they decide to abide by is at their own discretion anyway, so, step up and spin the wheel for them I guess).
Having said all that...I'd want my kid's or wife's killer dead as a doornail ASAP or sooner.

In most cases it is for the jury to decide. which really is not fair if you have lost a loved one. I would agree that if it was someone really close to me I would push for the death penalty, but if you kill, then your life should be ended as well.

So you mean every degree of killing right? Self-defense, involuntary manslaughter, accidental? They should just be killed right?

Murder? 1st Offence.....immediate lead poisoning to the cranium, in a .45 caliber kind of way. Upon conviction, wrap them in a body bag and insert the lead at 900 feet per second.

Hard to argue that view. You take someone elses life intentionally, you surrender your own automatically. (except in the military where you'd get a medal and promoted).

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth that most folks thinks comes from the Old Testament but the Code of Hammurabi written using cuniform, predates that document.

My problem with the death penalty is the finality of it & the chance of an error being made (as to guilt or innocence). There are some people, who based on their crime, simply don't deserve to continue living but we have to err on the side of safety. Life in prison, without the chance for freedom, seems sufficient. And I'm all for barren & desolate living conditions for criminals, regardless of the crime. Dirty, stinky, rundown jails & prisons? Who cares? Isolation, bad food, no recreation or sunlight? Go for it.

Thats great. But how about a scenario where some guys daughter is raped and stabbed to death. The father wants revenge . The killer goes to trial a year maybe 18 months later. The father decides that he will kill his daughter's murderer. He plans everything out to the last detail. The trial starts and the fther of the victim walks in pulls out a gun and kills the defendant. Thats justice right? But the father is guilty of murder. He planned it all,he executed it,he is guilty. So according to you he should be put to death with great dispatch. Thats an awesome opinion.
