Of course they were Jack but they also had the sence to realise that bringing it into the political arena was a recipe for disaster they proclaimed religiouse tollerance for all and not the supremecy of any one over another Lets just highlight one rather pertinant section of the speach the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed This says you have freedom of religiouse observence and the ability to pray to any god that you want NOT that the USA is a single church country, nor were the founding fathers from any one single church
I think the point reinforced here is that we are guaranteed Freedom OF Religion , not Freedom FROM Religion. Was there anything in that address that indicated any desire to create a non-Christian nation? Anything that indicated we should push God out of the fore? Religious tolerance means accepting every form of religion as well as one's choice not to practice a religion, it doesn't mean the elimination of religion or religious expression as the radical anti-God faction would have us believe. If anyone made the suggestion that a single national church or relgion be established, I missed it.

Except they never said that it should be a Christian country David they welcomed in ALL not simply Christians nor was the Christian faith classed as suprem amongst faiths, they were all equal in the eye's of the state
