Boy! Who could have predicted that the very people that brought this country to the edge of financial ruin would find so many friends in the Republican Party? As a matter of fact, ALL Republicans are protecting the interests of these people. My question is; When do Republicans, Independents that vote Republican, and Tea Party Activists from Main Street wake up and realize what utter Pons they are for the wealthy fat cats on Wall Street?

As of this point, the Republicans have blocked debate 3 times on financial reform.

Richard Shelby, the Repub who is working with Chris Dodd to craft the bill has said repeatedly that all the Dem leaders need to do is put language in the bill that backs up what they claim the bill does, specifically tightening up on "Too Big to Fail", the Dem guarantee that no more tax payer money will go to bail out financial institutions and NO PORK. Once the Wall Street big boys realize there are no more safety nets, addition government regulation & added Barack-cracy would be moot.
Problem is, Dodd & his boys say the bill does all of this but they won't put binding language in the bill...they are trying to leave themselves too many outs. Why? My speculation is that BO likes to be in a position to take over some struggling industry & impose his rules.

If that happens, this is a political strategy that could actual work come November. Halt negotiations on a compromise bill, put it up for a vote on debating it not caring if it passes but knowing they can use any votes against it in November. The Dems might actually have a good strategy there and be able to do their Party Of No thing all at the same time. Now, are the Republicans dumb enough to let that happen? I'd say it is a toss up but I think they will let it go forward at least to a debate.

Then why doesnt Shelby submit his own bill for approval? Have you seen the bill?
Perhaps it doesnt really need redundancy. And as far as being on the brink of collapse(a reply on the thread, not your reply) I think stocks are up, GM and BOA paid back their loans and so have a few others. Things may actually be looking up. With no help from that stinking socialist.

I haven't seen the bill but I did see 2 joint interviews Shelby & Dodd conducted and saw/heard their answers and reactions to questions & the Repub request for tougher language. Dodd didn't dispute a single statement made by Shelby. In fact Shelby asked Dodd point blank about why, if no tax money would be permitted in future bailouts, the bill didn't specifically state that...Dodd said it's language they "have to work through". Work through? Seems like 1 single sentence could eliminate hundreds of pages of Barack-cracy. Shelby is also insisting on NO PORK...he rightfully believes that if it doesn't pertain to the issue it has no place in the bill. Should Dodd object to that?
As for why Shelby doesn't submit his own bill? It's my understanding that Dodd & Shelby have collabarated on this issue for nearly 2 years. Why should Shelby start all over, on his own, when he is simply asking for the language to be put in the bill that Dodd says the bill accomplishes?

Now everyone here likes to claim they are informed, well no informed, non-partisan defense can be made on what Dodd is doing here. I like the approach Shelby is taking...the Repubs learned their lesson on the healthcare issue- don't trust what the Dems say, make them put it in writing...if you claim a bill does sometime, put it in writing & show it to us.

Davey boy...couple questions and comments. Some folks in here have suggested that my complete "hatred" of the republican party for the very wealthy, and enemy of the very poor, somehow blind me from objectivity. I'm curious. Do you have similar "hatred" for the left, and if so, wouldn't that blind you in the same way? Also curious. Have you ever heard of a democrat doing anything "good", or is everything they do "bad"? If there is anything good you've heard of...what would that be?

PS Hey I like you including me in your quote. Makes me feel special. Thanks, and allow me to reemphasize my point of view there. If given the choice as to whether the rich elite "capitalists" ought to "fix" things, (the group that worships cash above people under any and all circumstances..the more you have the better the person and p*ss*ng on anyone in the process is cool), or the government (that does occasionally include the poorer folks and does occasionally try and reign in the greed and excess for the good of all...cause umm...it's rather obvious these days that the rich only honor the rich)..hey....I'm very proud of my stance there. Thanks again Sparky!

Why should he start over? You just said his party doesnt trust the dems. Thats why he should start over. Just take the part of the bill that was his own and complete it. Wouldnt you think that Shelby had asked Dodd about the ''no tax money'' request way before the interview? Seems like grandstanding. If they are working on it together, why doesnt shelby put in the language he sees fit? I dont know whats in the bill so I cant speculate on it. It probably benefits some while screwing taxpayers(dont all bills/),But I just cant see working with someone you dont trust, and then complain you have no input.

Hypocrisy?? Surely not with anyone on the right. Gotta maintain that "party of no" agenda you know.

So...the Repubs are criticized for not working with Dems on some issues then criticized for trying to work with them on others....and the Repubs are called hypocrites?
The interviews I saw were joint interviews so Dodd had every opportunity to dispute what Shelby was saying but he just sat there with a grin on his face- one of the interviews was Meet The Press last Sunday, another was on CNN, I think, so you can reach your own conclusion.
As for starting over...why? A lot of time has been spent already. Why not ask the Dems to put their promises in writing? Why claim the bill accomplishes one thing but then leave out iron clad language that would back it up?

Even though you've been corrected, you continue to keep posting this lie, "The American people would never vote for socialism, but under the guise of liberalism the American people will adopt every fragmentof the socialist program"- Norman Thomas, Socialist Party presidential candidate"

You are the epitome of a Fox News junkie. You don't let facts alter your opinion.

I've been corrected? That's a laugh. You really do hold a lofty opinion of yourself, don't you dr moen? Here's something you should probably realize: Just because you make a statement doesn't it make it so. Maybe in your little vacuum, surrounded by the young naive college students who are out in the world for the first time but not in the real world. And your links? You always end up putting your foot in your mouth. Remember the debate over the haves & have nots? Your link disproved your argument by proving the gap was narrowing. And your link in the argument over the financial condition of institutions? Remember that one? It actually proved colleges & universities had more endowment now than ever before. Remember that? Hey, the good news in all of this is that you can go back to campus tomorrow & act like the big guy. The smart guy. Those kids either won't know the difference or they will be too scared to voice their opposition. At least you can pad that big ol' ego of yours.

I think you're as delusional as Lehigh. I posted a source that proved my assertion and yet you prefer the fiction of your own thoughts. You keep referring back to things that only happened in your own head and keep forgetting that the rest of us can't see those things because.....well......they're in your head. You have made so many false assumptions here and in several past posts that they aren't even worth chronicling. They are just too numerous to count.
You have the same distain and to a great extent lack of any real knowledge of higher education that the Righties are famous for. Your words prove this every time you post. Look, I get it, you are anti-intellectual. It doesn't surprise me one bit. I'm sure going into work tomorrow morning and picking up that same shovel will most certainly sear your hared of the educated class ever further into your psyche. I can't do much about that and I am not interested in getting into a pissing contest either. So, Adios!

    Dr moen,
I'm not sure how you can misinterpret my distain for your type as anything close to being anti-intellectual. In fact your type, you know the Peter Pan, career student-type who hides behind the protected walls of a college campus and bullies, expolits & endoctrinates impressionable kids, is what is causing the higher educational system to experience it's decline. I have spent enough time on campus to know there are serious, dedicated educators and then there's you. Have you ever seen the Seinfeld episode with THE MAESTRO? Yeah, you kinda remind me of him.

You should be careful with what you think you know. I have no contact whatsoever with impressionable kids as you call them. My only contact with students is with graduate and doctorial students and they are anything but impressionable. Most of them are adults well into their careers with families and grand children in some cases. Just another stupid assumption/stereotype on your part. Does being wrong ever get old for you?

Are you going to get mad because I am butting into your private thread again. Oh wait, you invited me my calling me delusional with no provocation. Since I am here, why are you using words like "the rest of us"? Can't you speak for yourself? Do these criticisms sound familiar? WE don't have distain for higher education, WE just have distain for you!

I'll see if I can get Fox News to prove it to you.

I used words like "the rest of us" because I couldn't think of anybody that was actually privy to his thought processes. I totally forgot about YOU! Separated at birth… You're still swinging I see. Try not to blow a gasket.

The word hypocrite never came up in my post. I never said in this post that repubs were hypocrites. Why doesnt Shelby put language he wants in the bill? and yes start over. Why not. I bet there are a lot of bills that start over in order to be passed. Shelby's wouldnt be the first. If, as you say, he is so skeptical of the bill why would he want his name on it? You also said this bill has been in the making for nearly two years. Since you say the repubs learned their lesson with the passing of the health care bill(which was just passed way after the start of the bill we now are discussing, why would they work with a party they cannot trust?

Well, you know, there's that little thing about Shelby & the Repubs not being in the majority. Heck, the dems control the WH & both Houses and still can barely get legislation passed, what kind of luck would Shelby have going head-to-head with a powerful schmuck like Dodd? He probably wouldn't even be allowed the time to present a billl. I think Shelby is conducting himself the best way he can..playing by the dems rules while trying bring attention to their actions. Don't forget, the Repubs only have issues with 2 pieces of the bill (plus the inclusion of pork), the easiest, less time consuming & only logical solution would be to press the dems to include iron clad language to support their claims, would it not?
