Protest cancels Coulter speech in Ottawa

A protest by hundreds of students led organizers to cancel a Tuesday night speech by American conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the University of Ottawa.
A spokesman for the organizers said Coulter was advised against appearing after about 2,000 "threatening" students crowded the entrance to Marion Hall, posing a security threat.
"It would be physically dangerous for Ann Coulter to proceed with this event," said conservative political activist Ezra Levant inside the hall. "This is an embarrassing day for the University of Ottawa and their student body . . . who chose to silence her through threats and intimidation."
A protest organizer, international studies student Mike Fancie, said he was pleased they were able to stop Coulter from speaking.
"What Ann Coulter is practicing is not free speech, it's hate speech," he said. "She's targeted the Jews, she's targeted the Muslims, she's targeted Canadians, homosexuals, women, almost everybody you could imagine."
The announcement of the cancellation was greeted with shouts of "Shame" and "We want Ann" from about 100 people inside the hall. Outside protesters mockingly chanted "Goodbye Ann Coulter."

    Cont'ed...

Good for Canada! Their students have the courage to call a hate speech purveyor for what she is. Freedom of speech was never intended to protect hate speech. Proud to have Canada as a neighbor. Nice goin' aye!

Liberal protesters making it physically dangerous for a conservative to speak at a university...not a real surprising development in this day and age. Wouldn't be surprising if the ideological roles were reversed, either. In the end, the protesters prevented her from speaking there and she will get some publicity out of it and probably make a few more bucks. Mission accomplished on both sides, I guess.

    Sad but probably true enough.

Of course, one also has to take into account these are the same citizens (probably the same demographic from the looks of it) who did this during the Olympics (of all things) just this year.

    Oh Canada, indeed. lol

Perhaps not as dangerous as the right wing kooks are making it for some of the dems safety on the news. Unless you watch Fox, then of course it's now shown and it's a non issue.

I wouldn't worry about Coulter though. He can take care of himself.

    Should have let her speak

I disagree. A college campus should be a place for the free exchange of ideas and viewpoints, but just spewing hatred so you can sell more books is hardly the mission of academia.

Ummmm, Wouldn't diversity of speakers & opinions be the very definition of "free exchange of ideas and viewpoints"? That you would make this statement and censor opinion in the same post kinda makes you look like a hypocrite, doesn't it?

Only you if consider hate speech important enough to include diversity of speakers and opinions. I personally don't but I'm not surprised that you do. There has to be a line somewhere between saying anything we want in public and saying things that dumb people will pick up and run with. The threats that Democratic congressmen have been receiving this week are an indication of what happens when hate speech is allowed to be aired. Stupid people are inspired to do stupid things and if unabated, civil society would eventually break down.

Thing is you dont have to attend, if you disagree with her views then boycott it, dont resort to threats of violence. The University if it felt the speaker was preaching hate could have banned her, the local goverment or Police Dept could have done the same. She could have even been refused entry into the country. Using Threats of violence is wrong and will only show others that it works

I tend to think that violence is not an appropriate response to hate speech any more than it is an appropriate response to healthcare reform. It seems a bit ironic that a mob used threats of violence to protest a speaker whose words they think promote violence. I hope some of those people have mirrors because they desperately need to look in them.

I think idealism and lofty principles end at the first blow of the baton.

Typical of liberals. When you disagree with them, you are deemed "hateful", "racist", "insensitive", etc. Hell...I told you before...when I disagree with B.O., I am going after his white ancestry part so as to not get into the race crap tangent that liberals bring up. Nice try...but been there and heard it.

Liberals lose in the arena of free debate, logic, math, and rational so they do what all liberals have always done..."shout" down their opponents. What you saw in Canada is typical of liberals. Hell...this is why they want the "Fairness" doctrine to shut up talk radio because liberals have tried and tried to make it in the talk radio private sector, but liberals continue to FAIL. Even fellow liberals don't listen because their own arguments are always flawed and have no meat to it. Now liberals do what they know best...prevent free speech by non-liberals by forcing their opponents to stay quiet until they deem it is necessary. Use the "racist" word and yell out..."No justice, no peace" or some crap like that to "feel" good.

Maybe liberals should reinforce their arguments instead of reinforcing their shouting...and whining.

As for college students that are living off of Mommy and Daddy and haven't worked a day in the real world. What to you expect? You know the saying...if you are not a liberal by what is the age...21?...you have no heart, but if you are not a conservative by age 30, well...you have no brain.

When you listen to these kids, it is quite clear they don't have a "clue", but they will...as long as they work, produce, and think for themselves...not listen to some liberal crap from some professor flunky who can't make it in the real world where yes...it is the private sector that expects results...not liberals who hand out "participation" trophies to all so they can "feel" good about themselves and dumb-down the world so their socialist government can make ALL of the decisions for us.

As long as liberals don't have to pay for it...

What's the matter? Smoking too much pot? Too stoned...or your goverment grant didn't arrive on time?...

How ironic your avatar is of "liberty" when you and socialist liberals are taking away everything from the individual and wishing the government to control all aspects of our lives.

I guess I missed the police brutality involved. In that case I think their violence was being misdirected. I think violence often is a proper response to a physical attack...which i think is different than violence against words...written in a bill or spoken at a university.

I wasn't advocating violence and there wasn't any on either the police of the protester's part in this story but both Coulter and the protesters did employ intimidation as a weapon. Coulter through her/his writing and the protesters through physically blocking her/his access to the event.

We are living in strange times these days. A lot lines are being blurred as a consequence. Clear definitions of what is right and what is wrong are only apparent to those who think little and emote much.

I really have grown to like Maddam Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Yes, some of it has to do with you hating her so much but mostly I think that she has really grown into the job and will be remembered as a very couragous woman. You are simply adding to her legend.

I lived in San Francisco for about 5 years so I know her a little bit. She has really risen through the ranks to a seat of power I never would have imagined. As the first female speaker of the House, she certainly handed the Republicans one of their biggest defeats. You have to give credit where credit is due. She whooped ya good! Try to have a iota of class and stand up like a man and show off those bruises. This lady thumped you a good one. You know what they say about a man who gets in a fight with a woman don't ya? If you win, big deal, it was a woman. If you lose, well you just got your butt kicked by a woman. However, if you lose and you keep whining about the fight, people begin to wonder if the fight wasn't actually between two women to begin with. I'm just sayin'.... :)
