I think the solution to our current woes lies in the tax system. What do you think would happen if we retracted all the bailout money & instead, eliminated federal taxes on both individuals & businesses for the rest of the year? Would your job be more secure if your employer wasn't being choked to death by taxes or having to make every decision based on the tax implications? If you were bringing home 25-50% more money each week, would you be able to spend more? Invest more? Save more? Payoff debt?
An already employed person's job might still be secure, but few employers would want to hire a new person if they knew the same high costs for an employee were to return next year. There isn't enough growth in the economy yet to justify such a risk.
Choked to death? Why dont we raise exise taxes to triple the amount of the product on which its imposed? Or better yet to the point where the products are no longer affordable. Then what? How does your solution work anyway? What is 25% more going to do? And I'm pretty sure investing more doesnt really boost sales at your local video store.
Sure can trust the USA government with your tax money, they have done such a "fine job" of managing what they pilfered already And we are having discussions in other threads about banks? Has anyone noticed that the federal debt is many times the revenue now, and it is only going to get worse. Might as well just take your money and flush it down the loo.
The workers who are already employed are the ones I'm thinking about, initially. I see this as a way to jump start the economy. As far as what difference 25% will make? Are you kidding? For people on the low end every dollar counts...a few extra hundred dollars per month may be what they need to get by, to make that house payment. For higher earners you are talking about big money, a lot of consumption? And how does investment help? Really, are you kidding me? How about increased confidence in the market and more stability.
No I am not kidding. And higher earners dont really need any extra. Unless extra means more frivolous. And you wrote this as a solution not ''as a way''. Welcome to economics 101. Where big business doesnt get taxed; and it ''trickles'' down to the employer.
"Higher earners dont really need any extra?" Class envy at it's worse. Hey, if big business isn't taxed they won't have anything to "trickle" down to the employers, right? From where I stand, if my employer has less cost to bear the company should be more secure, right? The more financially secure my boss is the more secure my job would be, right?
Flat tax rate across the board is the way to go, it is the fairest and most equitable form of taxation. Increasing taxes on higher incomes only serves to force these people to "get creative" and make tax shelters etc. that are NOT available to those with lesser incomes. Ask yourself, why would you want to make more money, only to have to pay a higher percentage of your income to bailout banks, and insurance companies?
I would prefer the flat tax to be on consumption rather than income. This way everybody is brought into the tax system...criminals, foreign visitors and so on.
Holy cow, you really wanna stick it to Rush's Palm Beach fatcats don't you? Seriously though, a consumption tax would definitely go after the people spending the most money, gees and if you could stick it to cocaine, and all the other sundry illegal substances, imagine the revenue the government would have?
Class envy, huh? You are way of off track. Funny. If you hitched your wagon to a unstable company, thats your tough luck, isnt it? Why dont we just tax those which only you designate.
craig a, you are definitely part of the problem in this country. Your statement is 100% socialistic. Who the hell are you or anyone else to tell another person they don't need to be more successful than they already are? Do us all a favor and get the hell out of this country!
Missed the point again, didn't you? The whole country is unstable right now. If the government wants to help why not let them ease the tax burden on everyone? My guess is that you are in the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder & despise anyone who has acheieved & earned and view every business as a big ol' bad conglomerate.
Wrong again. I was just never that into money. Maybe because I never had to worry about it. Maybe it was the way I was raised. I remember walking in Manhattan with my Dad one day; I was about 10. I pointed to a bum and sneered," Look at that bum over there.''. My father smacked me in the head a few times and said to me,Through a turn of events, that could be you someday.''. And he made me give the guy the five dollars my Dad had just given me. Is there a lesson there? Who knows. Who cares. You wrote here you are in the banking business. Good for you. One of those predatory loan officers? Betcha got great commissions on all those folks you @#%$ed over. And now you want to hold on to as much of is as you can, huh? Thats not you? I guess you work for one of those institutions that only lend money to those who dont really need it, but take it for the interest write off. You must be so proud. Am I still wrong? Either way you seem like a typical modern American. Gimme, gimme, gimme. And I dont need some flunky AM to tell me my lot in life. You are so far off the mark. Maybe you dont understand what I mean. Big earners can earn all the extras they want. But, how about this? When those who have nothing, get something, then those who have more can have extra? Or is that notion so abhorrent to a greedy selfish snob like yourself? I'm getting nothing from these stimulus plans. And I dont need anything from them. My kids are grown, why should I pay school tax? Becasue thats what good ctizens dA. And they dont whine about doing so. Why didnt you give your ''solution'' to this administration? And if its because you dont like them, why not the previous one? Its hard for me to take you seriously when you adopt the ethics of a fat radio talk host, and get your morals from closeted homo senators.
Why? I like it here. I have roots here. My family is here. Been here a long time. I am a SAR. Are you? Or did your Granparents sleep on a feces ladened deck of and old bucket so they could live the American dream? And now your dream is to own a much bigger flat screen. What aspirations! And why not. You earned it. You work hard to reach that point where you can get nicer things. But to you nicer means more exspensive. and the government has no right to take any portion that is yours. All yours. F everyone else. Gosh, you truly are a real American.
Dang! I guess I'm not a good american. I have compassion for those who are down and out.(Sometimes its not thier decision). I believe you that your opinions were formed way, sorry, wwwaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy before biased networks. That is where the problem lies. Mommy and Daddy tell you what think, and who to hate? And gee gosh, I sure am impressed with that resume. That doesnt make you right. It makes you arrogant. You must be right about big business being good. Take a look at Kerr/Magee, duPont, Enron, WR Grace, AIG, et al. I was just kidding about you taking your ideas to Washington, jeez what a ....... I bet you write to TV stations and take surveys on kids games too.
Letting your representatives know what's on your mind is wrong? Show of hands here....how many of you have made your beliefs known to your politicians> My guess is you are the minority here, not me.
Personally I've done it on many occasions and will continue to do so. Usually via email but a few phone calls as well. I have always received a response whether or not I liked it and realizing that many times it's not the "actual person". The point is it CAN be done and it goes to the highest office in the land whether or not you think that person will listen. Saying nothing will surely accomplish nothing. This is a FACT.
