Long Term Hurricane Katrina Victims Being Moved To Arizona

I just read an article concerning all the mobile homes being stored here in Arkansas and how the upcoming new administration is planning on moving all of them to Arizona, since they don't have tornados and it's safer to live in a mobile home in Arizona than many other places in the U.S..

The article went on to say something about using land in a National Park to turn into Mobile Home Parks so the long term survivors of Hurricane Katrina can move in and have a safe place to live, since things are still in somewhat a mess in Louisiana and so many are still living in government subsidized housing in Arkansas and Texas.

I'm glad they are finally going to use those mobile homes and not let them go to waste. :D That's a smart plan! And the money that will be saved can be used to help create jobs for them in Arizona so they can stay there and make a living.

We are going to create 21st century Indian Reservations and stick Katrina victims in them?

And on top of that, we are going to trash the environment in our nationals parks to do it?

This has to be a joke.

That was a nice little bit of conjecture at the end. And let me guess, Obama takes full credit?

Ever think about writing movies? You have a great imagination.

We don't want em in AZ, regardless of race, creed, skin color, religion, sexual preferance etc etc etc.

Those still dependant on a government after all this time are just plain and lazy slackers. Same kind of folks now looking to the governent to save them for whatever " crisis" thay have made of their life.

Actually, I did make a mistake. They are not moving onto a National Park, the Feds will be leasing Indian Lands for the Mobile Home Parks. I guess it's part of spreading the wealth, instead of rich homeowners getting the federal money each month to house the victims, a money strap Indian Tribe will get it and will be able to finally bring their people out of poverty.

Sounds like a good plan to me plus, Arkansas, Louisiana & Texas all voted for McCain and Arizona is McCain home turf, I think turn-around is fair play. :D

So we are going to warehouse Katrina victims in the hot Arizona sun in shoddy built mobile homes and trailers that have been shown to outgas dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde.

It doesn't sound like a good plan to me. It sounds like a Final Solution to the 'Katrina Problem'.

Oh Joe!! You crazy old conspiracy theorist you!! This has already been thought of and a comprehensive plan developed.

It's not that hot there!! There's only 212 and 1/2 days of sun, with less than 18% of those going over 100....on average. The nights are cool. AC has already been provided for. If any of those break down, the indians will fan them with palm fronds at a rate of minimum wage plus $5, paid for through the Katrina victims fund.
The indians will teach them to hunt, fish and create bead art. Within 6 months, 90% of the trailer park will be employable, in high demand, and moved out. At which point the government can scrap the trailers at the local yard, thereby boosting the local economy while also allowing the government to recoup some money from the effort. Obama will be on hand to see the last family out as a bright, full rainbow will appear over the scrap yard and the joy of the occasion will fade into history.

How dare you try to twist the story around and make it look bad.

Formaldehyde is a chemical which emits gasses which the EPA considers to be highly toxic and carcinogenic (known to cause lung, nose, and throat cancer) but which is not regulated for trailer manufacturing in this country. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, exposure to formaldehyde toxins can create irritated eyes, breathing problems, headaches, asthma attacks, coughing, congestive heart disease, nausea, depression, memory-impairment, skin rashes, respiratory problems and even can lead to cancer. To compound the problem, high temperatures or high humidity increase the toxin levels.

Worse, for people who already are compromised with respiratory health issues, and for infants, children, nursing mothers, and elders, exposure can prove disastrous and even more deadly.

"Formaldehyde is used in cheap building materials like particle board, plywood, curtains, molded plastics, counter tops, glue, carpet, insulation, and wallpaper. While normal trailers and mobile homes also contain these toxins, the FEMA trailers and mobile homes, hurriedly built as bare-bones cheap models, seem to contain significantly higher concentrations.

In 2006, the Sierra Club tested FEMA trailers in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama and found 83-94% of them to contain formaldehyde levels far above EPA and OSHA recommended workplace limits of 0.10 parts per million. Other testing has shown comparable results. Varying reports state that the gas levels emitted by the formaldehyde in the contaminated trailers ranged from 3 to 1,000 times the acceptable EPA limits."

Thanks for the info Stu. It's more serious than I had previously believed. I wonder if the original post will disappear now?
You were actually 100% right. You would think they'd rather leave them with the tornado risk than spend the money to mobilize the mess. Sure makes you wonder.

Sad part is, they probably could have made half as many trailers, twice as good, minus all the cheap materials. Most of them have gone to waste anyway. Really sad.

I guarantee the only thing they regret about it is that they got caught.

It wasn't aimed at you or a mod. I thought that maybe now that Toad sees what is more likely the real, sinister meaning behind moving the trailers, he might go back and delete the original post and try to save face. Maybe not.

What makes you think a Toad ever needs to save face? Even when it's squished against the pavement, a Toad doesn't need to save face. :D

Why not relocate them back to their home? Have you been to New Orleans lately? I go about once every 3 months or so & I can assure you there is plenty of land that can be freed up- land that is just sitting there decaying.

It might wash some of that toxic material out of them. :)

The ones stored in Mississippi. were being auctioned off until the chemical thing came to light. The paper there said it would be cheaper to clean them than to store them.
