So what were you doing when the Trade Centers and Pentagon got bombed as well as a plane going down in Pennsylvania?

I was working in a truck stop. We heard the news and had it piping over the radio. No one REALLY knew what to think.

I was working the morning shift so I left before the "gas crisis" started. Anyone remember that? Towers been hit by terrorists and in some areas gas jumped from $2 a gallon to as much as $8. Yeah, greedy owners taking advantage of a national tragedy.
Eventually some of these stations got closed for gouging.

I had a 25 mile commute home that day. Took the scenic route on a beautiful early fall day. Sun shining, leaves just starting to turn and 70 degrees. How could this be I thought?

Then I got home and saw what was really going on. Had a friend that's a firefighter in NYC. We didn't hear from him for days. Luckily he was alright.

Had another friend who was en route from Boston to San Diego. He ended up in Toronto where he was greeted by Canadian soldiers (not for him) with weapons drawn.

A horrible day for America indeed. It also showed our strengths, weaknesses and support.

We banded together, some took advantage for financial gain and I will ALWAYS thank the Canadians for the INSTANT support we received.

People seem to forget about these things. I never will.

So I ask again. What were you doing?

Nikki and I were on a flight from Amsterdam to Stanstead in London when it happend we were the last flight allowed to land before they shut the airport. We knew something had happend due to the behaviour of the flight crew but thought it was a problem with the plane!
It was only when we landed and were picked up that a mate asked if we had heard about the twin towers we thought it was a joke at first until he turned the radio on. It is a day I will remember as long as I live.

I was at work. Mostly I was doing security checks for the initial hours after and then helped gather up medical equipment to ship out if needed. I could only catch occasional glimpses of what was going on when I would pass a tv. Then I had to go home and try to catch of couple of hours sleep (didn't happen) because I had to lead the security duty that night for the hospital as we went to 12 hour shifts/24 hour coverage. I continued to do that for about a month or so.

Residing in a small village in SW Ukraine, with no television and a very slow internet connection and thinking we were probably in the safest place in the world at that point.

I was on my way to work and the radio was reporting that a plane had hit the towers, they had no other info so I was picturing some small cesna or something. Get in to work and they have the news on in the training room big screen (and I do mean big) and we watched the tower fall. On the huge screen you could see, very easily, the people hanging and falling from windows and what not...it was surreal for sure.

Me, the wife & kids had arrived at Disney late on the 10th...we were eating breakfast when, we could tell by all the commotion around the park, we knew something was wrong. We were escorted out of the park pretty quick. We were staying on the property and everything was pretty much shut down for the next couple of days. No flights out, no rental cars available and a tropical storm hit just as soon as the parks reopened! The airport opened up briefly but when someone sneaked onto the tarmac & spray-painted grafitti on some of the planes so they shut it back down. The company I work for ended up buying a van at a local dealership so we could get back home. I remember everybody being very nice- Disney was allowing folks to stay free if they were stranded, the dealership delivered the van to us & even stopped to pick up car seats (the kids were little then) that Wal-Mart provided at no charge, as long as we agreed to donate them when we got back home.
