Opinion: Putin Wanted to Lead a Great Power. Instead, He Shrunk Russia's World.

One year into his war with Ukraine, Vladimir Putin’s world has shrunk. He’s lost his claim to be a global leader. Prior to his launching the invasion of Ukraine a year ago, the world treated Russia as a great power with a seat at the table on major international issues. Relations with the West may have been tense, but European and American officials continued to engage with Russia. Russia was an energy superpower with the geopolitical heft that went with that, and Putin had just established a “no limits” partnership with China’s President Xi. And Ukrainians were divided over how they viewed Russia.

What a difference a year has made. The devastation wreaked by Russians on the Ukrainian people has consolidated the entire country against them and ensured that Ukrainians will despise their large neighbor for a long time to come. Ukraine will emerge from this war with one of the most effective armies in Europe and with the prospect of European Union membership and close ties to NATO. Ukraine, as numerous officials reiterated at last weekend’s Munich Security Conference, will become part of the European family, the exact opposite of what Putin hoped to achieve with this war.

Russia’s relations with the West are broken and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Few Western leaders advocate engaging Russia anymore. And the collective West is united in its opposition to the war as it increases sanctions on Russia and severs economic ties. Russian officials are sanctioned, no longer welcome in many international fora. And Russian oligarchs have lost access to their homes and yachts in Europe.

Putin may have believed a year ago that Europeans were so dependent on Russian hydrocarbons that they would not jeopardize their access to them by opposing the war. But Europe has managed to wean itself from Russian oil and gas in a remarkably short time, jettisoning 50 years of energy interdependence. Russia will no longer have the geopolitical influence that had qualified it as an energy superpower even as it sets its sights on the Asian market.

Biden led this effort. He funded much of the war effort along with many of our allies. He was right about Putin invading even when Zelenskyy said it wouldn't happen. Through the incredibly brave efforts of the Ukrainian people and our unwavering support along with NATO, Putin will never recover and has effectively weakened his own position.

I know you can't credit Biden with anything due to your hyper-partisan beliefs and nobody really cares what you think anyway. The only thing that matters is that one of the worst dictators on the planet is getting what he so richly deserves. If you can't be happy about that, you really aren't the American you think you are.

I hope with all my heart that the person who's opinion you posted is 100% correct. Rather than jump on the band wagon of great expectations and wished for outcomes, I prefer to keep quiet and wait until the Fat Lady sings. In spite of what he wrote, it appears part of Ukraine will end up as Russian territory. I'm even willing to make a bet on that with you. The loser does not post on PL for a month. Frankly, I have found Biden's unwavering support of Ukraine to be one of the few redeeming qualities of his term as POTUS and hope that Putin's actions have reminded those on the left that are not in support of our nations military of the necessity for a superior military force here at home.

 

It's not just Biden. The world is behind Ukraine. Biden has been very strategic in his support of Ukraine and applying an abundance of caution in dealing with a lunatic that has nuclear weapons and has threatened to use them offensively. All I have heard from the Right is China, China, China. What could be more of a concern than a mad man threatening nuclear war? China is a growing power but they still only spend a fraction of what we do on war machinery.

 

Yes, we know biden is in bed with China and you'd rather not think about it, but please, PLEASE stop minimizing the threat from China. You look foolish.

Biden has pushed Putin away from the US but meanwhile Russia influence in Latin America, Africa and Asia has grown whereas Biden is destroying our sphere of influence there. Read the financial sector reports as well as look at the world from other nations news outlets. Be it from Brazil to India. With Nigeria thrown in. Tons of people from different continents that loved Trump and the USA and now don’t pick up the phone so to speak from Biden.

It seems as if every foreign policy that the Biden administration has done has weakened the USA and benefits China. Look up how Nancy’s trip to Tawain actually led to the current political party in place to have big losses in the election that followed.

 

Lots of dictators loved Trump. Birds of a feather. Cut the head off of the snake and the body dies. Trump emboldened so many dictators in 4 years, I've lost count, including Putin.

China and India are not behind Ukraine. China and India love the cheap Russian oil that used to go directly to Europe. Throw in most of Africa for Different reasons, The Middle East, A lot of Latin America. Etc. The nations that make up the vast world’s majority actually have no respect for Ukraine and are not brain washed or mid educated by the fake story backdrop that is constantly fed by the UK and whoever put Biden in power.

The lie of the stolen election has taken a beating this week in case you have also forgotten that little development. I’ve posted already how a former Democrat congressman was caught fixing ballots in Pennsylvania but you choose to ignore that as long as you can have your one party system.

 

I posted several instances of MAGAs listening to the nonsense of a stolen election and voted for dead relatives and from multiple addresses. Big deal. Those things happen every election and amount to nothing but talking points.

We already have a three party system. Democrats, MAGAs, and the few actual Republicans.
