No/ I want the same thing you want/ destroy the Russians with no NATO forces involved. But/ you have to give the Ukrainian people a chance to defend themselves vs the Russians. If we do not stop him (Putin) here in Ukraine/ Moldova would be next/ then the Baltic States (NATO) which would start WW3. Bombastic meglamaniacs like him, only prey on weakness/ inaction. I think sanctions/ cutting off all trade will hurt Russia/ China even more. Once the masses are hungry/ with no future or trust in their dictators/ unrest will turn into rebellion.

 

I'm not so sure NATO involvement means WW3 at this point. I know Belarus would probably join Russia if NATO forces were involved, but do you guys think China would? Their responses to the situation have been generally opposed to NATO, but also non-committal in terms of actionable promises. I think Russia is in a very weak position from flailing around so long in this conflict.

Agreed, this proxy war is the cheapest way to fight Putin and no Americans need die in the process. The billions invested today is a drop in the bucket compared what it would cost us in blood and treasure in a direct confrontation. Japan just offered 5.5 billion in support. The other NATO countries are also chucking in lots and lots of support. This was a gift from Putin. He will never recover from this. The real question is who is likely to take his place? That is what we should be asking.

 

I doubt China is willing to risk confrontation with NATO over Russia. They would have little to gain by antagonizing such a huge trading partner like the US and our allies. They'll look out for China not Russia. They play the long game.

 

What we should be asking is why are we stupid enough to let dwindle our preparedness for a much more serious conflict with China when they do decide it is time?

For now, they are perfectly content to quietly support our adversaries just enough to drain our resources and corrode our alliances.

This is one very long, very methodical march China is on, and very few have their eye on the ball.

WW2 put in end to his dreams/ since the Soviet Union lost 45M thru purges/ famines/ gulags/ then another 25M KIA. Not to take in the 100K warplanes shot down by luftwaffe/ 100K+ tanks killed on battlefields.
Putin also has an agenda/ he wants to make Russia "Great again" by restoring the original borders of the USSR+ add in Warsaw Pact Countries. If, the West did nothing, he would first take Ukraine/ Moldova/ Georgia/ Belarus/ all the Stans.
Then when invading the Baltic States (NATO) WW3 would get involved.
We should have listened to Patton in 45/ he wanted to attack the Soviets/ crush them/ then have a "Moscow Trials" for Stalin and his henchmen.
