I fell off the wagon last night and bought a coin. I'm trying to break the habit, but it's hard. I logged onto eBay thinking no harm in looking, right? Well, I saw a raw (Au53) 1850 N2 Large Cent (early die state) that I just had to possess. The N2 variety has a series of horizontal reverse die gouges.

A very nice piece, and I would have purchased it.
Curiosity only, what was the reason for posting on this forum? I do think it is a good idea, intended or not, because it may be a more pleasant audience.

I don't like to have the content my speech moderated. I don't begin political speech on CT, but I don't turn a cheek, either. Someone must stand up for Truth, Justice, and the American Way! ;)

Like an old Marine Gunnery Sergeant friend of mine was fond of saying..."Don't start no sh!t and there won't be none".

I concur, and that is my exact reason for asking the question.

Good on you. Actions are louder than words.

On to the piece. The dentils tell the story of this coin, as does the 1 and 5. Take a close gander, in hand. From the photo, my opinion is this is a VERY nice piece.

    Thanks :)

I don't have it, yet. Those are Seller pics. There are also lighter die scratches beneath the lower part of the date. If this were an older die state, there would be a die crack across UNI[TED S]TATES...which I don't see on here. I like old coppers with unique and obvious die varieties.

Since you gave me a like, I will now share with you. From the photos, I suspect this is the unlisted Newcomb recut 1 variety.

    Hmmm...please continue! :)

I just have Newcomb's 1956 edition of "United States Copper Cents 1816-1857". If it's unlisted, where did you hear of it?

    Nevermind I found it!

Wow! I just zoomed in and I think you're right! Thanks! :D

Do you have any other info on this variety?

Look at the 1. Look at the 5, btw, in considering large or small date. Again, I am going by the photo, and I can't increase the size to ascertain, but I can see what appears from the photo to be another "1" remnant.

I worry that I'm seeing what I want to see. :( It would be cool to have an undocumented variety. ;)

Btw, If you right click and save the photo, you can open it in a viewer and zoom in as much as is helpful.

I tried, don't know why it doesn't work, but, check Breen, and check WorthPoint listing #1676646771.

The variety has 2 Bases in the middle of the digit "1", and scratches in "one cent". I am not at home to help with the Breen number, but will do so later. I also remember reading in ANS a long time ago that it is a suspected fake. It has been years, but I am sure you can check ANS library on the internet.

My Breen Large Cents stops at 1814. That's why I got the Newcomb book. My Breen encyclopedia just talks about the Open and Closed "5" varieties. Mine appears to be the Closed 5 variety.

I want to say that I see the same (possible) RPD marks at the center of the "1" as the Worthpoint coin, but they don't look exactly the same. My pictures are too grainy when zoomed. I'll try to post some better pictures once the coin arrives.

The Superman persona makes perfect sense. Something I have been saying about the far Right forever. You are not super heroes. You are not on a mission to save the world. You can't leap tall buildings in a single bound. You're not fast, righteous, or more patriotic than everyone else. You simply see yourselves as one of these fictional characters because you watch too much TV. Check yourself in the mirror. You're old white dudes not masked caped crusaders.

It's not about us...it's about the Constitution. The Constitution is "Superman"!

What do you think of my new baby? :)

But Joe….. Isn’t truth, justice and the American way exactly what is being ripped to shreds right now? I am sure I viewed a post just yesterday of American flags and headstones of fallen soldiers ripped apart as though they were simply tattered waste……. See, one thing I will say about the majority of conservatives. They typically practice humility. Now before you start jumping up and down about Trump, I said the majority of conservatives. There is absolutely nothing humble about the shift taking place in our nation. It is an “in your face” attack against all we have lived our lives by. Yes, in fact our way is being rudely ripped away from us. Getting a job, working hard for family, saluting the flag, saying a prayer with our kids…. These things do represent the American way to us. And we are truly mocked for it.

I could tell it was all about the Constitution on January 6th.

Is that a stock photo of the coin?

Randy, at least you are consistent in seeing this country through rose colored glasses. I have no doubt that the conservatives, whatever that means these days, feel like something is being taken from them. In fact, they are right. They are losing the throne they have always taken for granted. Nobody ever gives up the throne they sit on, it has to be taken. The more honorable thing for conservatives to have done would have been to share the power they felt entitled to instead of jealously guarding it like the bunch of privileged A-holes they are. But like I said, nobody ever gives up a throne once they have it, it must always be taken.

Whether it is through false patriotism, religious dogma, or thinly disguised class warfare that conservatives use to shield themselves, the wall is crumbing under the weight of it's own hypocrisy. It is inevitable that change is coming and the future will look much different. Conservatives and their empire of self-aggrandizing self-preservation has had a good run. The world is a different place now. They will not acclimate to this new reality and therefore must be swept aside so that a new more inclusive reality can grow and replace the old outdated patriarchy of old white men. As an old white man, I welcome this new reality because it is more just, more American, and more inclusive than the old broken system meant only for the privileged few. Good riddance.

Good job, Little Joe. Keep up your dividing the People schtick.
You care squat about, and have zero respect for, anyone or anything, but your own self centered all important BS.
You are incapable of having a non-accusatory non-political conversation.

Which Branch did you serve in the Armed Forces, again? I am sure you were popular in the barracks in the BS sessions. Or, on the field of battle.

The former GOP is made up of two primary groups these days. The traitors, seditionists, insurrectionists, white supremacists, and criminals, while the other half of the GOP are those that make excuses, defend, willfully ignore, and go along with the other half of the GOP.

The devils bargain here is that half of the GOP gets to be as racist, sexist, anti-democratic, and as hell-bent on treason as they really are while the other half of the GOP does nothing about the first half of their party while turning a blind eye to everything that is pointed out to them never acknowledging, never taking responsibility, never owning the loudest voices in their own ranks.

You certainly can choose to play the collaborator role in this situation but collaborators always get what's coming to them in the end. You will be treated no differently than those that attack the pillars of democracy. You will pay the same price as those that tried and failed to bring this country to it's knees. You will finally be made to stand up and be counted along with the rest of your ranks.

Imagine the talking you'll do then.
