Hats Off To The Medical Folks

I play guitar in my church. I arrived today and the skies opened up. It was raining in sheets. I gathered up my guitar and hobbled as quickly as I could with my gimp foot to the entrance of the church. Walked in the door, shook off the rain and realized…. I left my mask in my truck… Crap… Started to head back out the door when a friend of mine in the medical field stopped me and pulled one of those medical quality masks out of his pocket. I graciously accepted it and went on about my business getting everything ready to play…. Halfway through the first song, I was lightheaded because it truly is a chore to breathe with those medical masks. I had been using one of those thin cloth masks we all see at the five and dime. An hour later when service was done, I felt as though I had run a 5k and couldn’t wait to shed that mask…… If you are a medical person and spend eight hours a day struggling to breathe through those masks, my hat is off to you.

I run all the time and don't any difficulty breathing through a mask at work. Everyone at my factory, floor and office have been wearing masks for over a year now.

I too wear masks. I was just surprised at the effort it took to use a medical mask…. And I ran every day of my life until nine years ago. Arthritis saw to that end.

People select masks and wear masks in ways they can tolerate...rendering them useless in many cases.

I also wear those medical masks, and it isn't easy for anyone breathing through them until one gets used to it.

Anyone who claims the purpose of the masks is primarily to protect others and not oneself either doesn't understand how they work, or is more supportive of their political agenda than of the truth. The masks capture much less outbound moisture in the fabric than we are led to believe. The fogging of eyeglasses perfectly illustrates this.

For me the difficulty wasn't in pulling enough air to breathe, but in keeping the exhaust from fogging up my glasses on the way out. I found that what works for me is rolling the reinforced top edge inward twice to increase the thickness of material at that edge, and then bending it to conform to, and better seal around the bridge of my nose. While that prevents my glasses from fogging up, it doesn't prevent the exhaust from escaping the mask as the most energetic proponents claim. That's because moisture laden air escapes through the billowing sides instead of the top when I exhale.

When I inhale, the mask doesn't billow, but instead pulls closer to my face, reducing the size of any openings at its edges, much like a check valve closes under negative pressure.

Someone insisting a non-wearer must wear a mask is much the same as the non-wearer insisting that the wearer stay home. Both are infringing on the rights of the other.

As strongly as I feel about this, I agree the masks do help, and I continue to wear them where appropriate. Short of protecting others, they protect me, and they at least make the snowflakes feel like I respect them . . . just not their views, please.

    Science liberals . . . science.

Tell your dumb buddies who are dropping like flies. By the way if your glasses are fogging up you aren't wearing it right

I think if we boiled it down, the wearing of most of these masks is done to make others feel good.

Never feared getting a bit of your spittle or drool on a patient, while thinking only of viruses, eh Quince? That's what the mask is really intended for.

The use of the traditional surgical mask as a prophylactic against COVID transmission is merely a by-product of its convenience and availability, and not emblematic of superior effectiveness.

I did a lot of drywalling back in the day.
Always wore masks. N95s usually and you get used to it.

Hey TC. Try putting a little shampoo on a rag and rubbing it on your glasses. Really helps prevent fogging.

Like I told you before, the Archie Bunker shtick was supposed to be satire. not a lifestyle.
