I don't know if I agree that we are any more or less consumed with ourselves than we have ever been. Where is the proof of that? I think that it might be a popular notion in religious circles to get people to focus on something outside of themselves. And that wouldn't be a bad idea generally, but in the case of religion, the focus is merely redirected towards something specific like Jesus, prophets, and the church itself. What's the point of getting people to think outside themselves if they are then just going to be boxed in by a belief system?
If more people followed the teachings of a guy like Jesus the world would be a much better place. This coming from an Atheist. Yep, leave the church out of it.
