Racial/Ethnic profiling!

    The people who say they know what it is, tell us that it is the inclusion of racial* or ethnic** characteristics in determining whether a person is considered likely to commit a particular type of crime.

    Civil rights advocates are against the use of racial profiling tactics by the police. They argue that the disproportionate number of convicted minorities is due to "racial profiling".

    Countering this, it is argued that including race as one of the several factors in suspect profiling is generally supported by the law enforcement community within the Western world. It is claimed that profiling based on "any" characteristic is a time-tested and universal police tool, and that excluding race as a factor is insensible.

    * The most widely used human racial categories are based on visible traits. (especially skin color, facial features and hair texture)

    ** Human beings whose members identify with each other, either on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or ancestry, or recognition by others as a distinct group, or by common cultural, linguistic, religious, or territorial traits.

    So how do you describe someone who has just committed a crime? Give it a try!

    Well I would call them criminals but that is just me :D Crimes are commited by people from all walks of life, all types to sugest that certain types are more prone to commiting crime in my view is plain silly and went out with Hitler and his similar views concerning those of the Jewish faith.

    I am going to play the devils advocate and say that they are only trying to feed their families and buy their girlfriends fancy rings. I would most likely do the same thing under simular circumstances. But with all all their oil wealth, some say that Venusevelia (cant spell it) has twice the oil as Saudi Arabia, albiet a little deeper. So send them home and let them fix their own problems. We certainly have enough problems of our own!:)

    I was educated in the school of hard knocks but that is Bush's objective. It takes me a little while to think about something but he is only looking out for our best interests, no matter how much I may disagree with him, he is still my President and I will defend the Constitution, to the best of my ability.

    The question was, "So how do you describe someone who has just committed a crime?" Are you telling me that you would only say something like; 'be on the lookout for this person, who may be a criminal.'
    Just how many cases would you expect to solve doing it this way? I'll say one thing for you, and that is you sure didn't use any racial or ethnic descriptions.

    Neverlost, I would ask you the same question I just ask De Orc, and that was "So how do you describe someone who has just committed a crime?" Try and remember you aren't suppose to use any racial or ethnic descriptions in your all points bulletin to fine someone who just committed a crime.

    Give it a try!

    From watching COPS on TV, I would describe them as such...

    White male, about 25 years old, 5'9, 150 lbs, mullet haircut with a goatee, wearing a white, wife-beater tank top and dirty jeans. Has various tattoos and is probably smoking a cigarette. Last known residence...Shady Hills Trailer Park.

    Go get 'em officer!

    I'm afraid that if I gave you the age, color of skin or their height, it might be profiling. The crime might be robbery of a service station in border town, Texas. What I'm getting at is I want you to try and describe for someone else, without using any of the 'trigger' adjectives and/or nouns that cause some people to yell discrimination and profiling.

    Can you see why this may explain why there are so many mid twenty white males with tattoos filling our prisons. Isn't this Ethnic profiling? There seems to be a problen when you apply all the rules that there is to follow and NOT either racial or ethnic profile.

    Very well it would read something like this IC (1,2,3,4) eye's, Hair (If Known) Height, Clothing, Mode of transport, Armed or not, Last seen heading in...... Wanted in conection with.......

    I personally don't think any of these descriptors could be called racial or ethnic in general. The problem is, it could be just about anyone who happens to be traveling in a certain direction. I'm not sure if it's a man or a woman that I'm looking for, and believing that they are armed may or may not help much.
    How many people do you think would be caught if the law inforcement used this method of getting out the info for the patrol to watch for?

    Doing this is a lot tougher than I initially thought, and doing it to catch the 'bad' guy can be even harder if all the PC rules are followed.

    Strangly enough that is the system they use in the UK and it seems to work quite well over here :D

    What you have to know is what IC1, IC2 etc stand for then it makes perfect sence without anyone been able to call the user a racist LOL

    Those designations must not work all the time as this is something I've been able to find related to this subject as it relates to the UK.
    Now if I were looking for someone, I would be a lot more proficient in finding that person if I were using the description given by Stu Joe. But then I'm old fashion and don't really care if someone thinks I'm being a racist or not!

    The IC system is just code for race, isn't it? So instead of saying a White Guy, I would say an IC1? That strikes me as quite funny.

    Here is the code for you Stu, and the part that strikes me as the funniest is that apparently the British ACLU isn't smart enough to figure it out. Either that or the Brit's have better control over their loud mouth protesters, than we do around here. The code for your enlightenment:
    UK’s Ethnicity classifications

    IC1–IC6 - IC codes are used as radio shorthand for a description of a subject's ethnicity as perceived by the observing officer.
    The IC codes are:
    * IC1 – White European
    * IC2 – Dark European
    * IC3 – Afro-Caribbean
    * IC4 – Asian (in the British sense - ie Indian or Pakistani)
    * IC5 – Oriental
    * IC6 – Arab/North African
    * IC0 – Unknown ethnicity
    * Some forces use IC7 as unknown ethnicity.
    "IC" itself stands for "Identity Code", so "IC code" is a tautology though still commonly used.

    British police forces are required to use the SDE 16+1 codes (as opposed to the commonly-used radio shorthand IC codes) when spoken contact has taken place and an individual has been given an opportunity to state their self-perceived ethnicity.
    SDE - Self Defined Ethnicity codes (also called "16+1") classify a person's self-perceived ethnicity after spoken contact has taken place, such as after questioning, stop-and-search or arrest.
    The SDE codes are:
    Asian or Asian British
    * A1 – Indian
    * A2 – Pakistani
    * A3 – Bangladeshi
    * A9 – Any other Asian background
    Black or Black British
    * B1 – Caribbean
    * B2 – African
    * B9 – Any other Black background
    Mixed
    * M1 – White and Black Caribbean
    * M2 – White and Black African
    * M3 – White and Asian
    * M9 – Any other Mixed background
    Chinese or other ethnic group
    * O1 – Chinese
    * O9 – Any other ethnic group
    White
    * W1 – British
    * W2 – Irish
    * W9 – Any other White background
    Not Stated
    * NS – Not Stated

    If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck! I raised a few pooping ducks before. Downstream the
    catfish were huge and will bite at an empty hook.

    I can see the skin color being ethnic profiling but what does the height have to do with it?
