IRS On Donald Trump: 'Nothing Prevents Individuals From Sharing Their Own Tax Information'
The GOP presidential candidate has claimed he can't release his tax returns because he's being audited.
    02/26/2016 12:50 pm ET

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said during Thursday's GOP primary debate that he can't release his tax returns because he is currently being audited by the IRS, but the agency says nothing prevents individuals from sharing their tax information.

"Federal privacy rules prohibit the IRS from discussing individual tax matters. Nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information," the IRS said Friday in a statement.

While the IRS says anyone can release their own tax information at any time, some tax lawyers advised it may not be in an individual's best interest to do so.

"Think of an audit as an investigation, an on-going investigation," Steven Goldburd, a lawyer who specializes in tax law, told The Washington Post. "Any person that has legal counsel, their legal counsel will say, 'If you're under investigation, you should not be talking to the media, you should not be talking to anyone other than your legal counsel or through your legal counsel.'"

Goldburd added that while a tax audit is not an criminal investigation, it would still be inadvisable for Trump to release his tax information.

Trump also suggested that the agency has audited him repeatedly because of his faith.

"Well, maybe [it's] because of the fact that I'm a strong Christian, and I feel strongly about it and maybe there's a bias," Trump said in an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo after the debate.

The IRS denied that taxpayers are audited because of their religion.

"The IRS stresses that audits of tax returns are based on the information contained on the taxpayer’s return and the underlying tax law -- nothing else. Politics and religion do not factor into this," its statement said. "The audit process is handled by career, non-partisan civil servants, and we have processes in place to safeguard the exam process."

Trump's refusal to release his tax returns came after former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called on him to do so and suggested there was a"bombshell" in them.

Editor's note: Donald Trump is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist, birther and bully who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims -- 1.6 billion members of an entire religion -- from entering the U.S.

After the rest of their stunts, why should I believe a word they say?

What part of nothing prevents any individual from releasing their own tax information seems suspicious to you?

There was an interesting discussion on NPR today. The guest was explaining why the dims are so afraid of Trump. Apparently, up to 10% of likely dim voters claim they won't vote for Hillary Clinton, presented by Goldman Sachs under any circumstance. An additional 10% or so are expected to cross party lines & vote for Trump regardless of who gets the dims nomination.
Now, I don't particularly care for Trump but it looks like a sure thing for the good guys if he runs against Hillary Clinton, presented by Goldman Sachs.

Whatever that's supposed to mean... It never means anything but that never stops you.

Trump didn't say his lawyer told him not to release his tax returns, He did say...

"I'm being audited now for two or three years, so I can't do it [release returns] until the audit is finished, obviously. And I think people would understand that," Trump said during CNN's Republican debate.

An audit by itself would not prevent Trump from releasing his tax returns. It is up to an individual whether to disclose his or her tax return -- to the public, to a lender or to anyone else who wants to see it.

There is nothing preventing Trump from releasing his taxes. You know it, I know it, and Trump knows it. He just doesn't want to just like Romney. Billionaires never like people to know how they became billionaires. Remember, there are only two kinds of Republican's. The wealthy class and the suckers like you.

Are you a tax attorney? But you are saying that the your referenced attorneys are wrong. Your post said that they advised AGAINST releasing tax returns while undergoing an audit. I know I am not a tax attorney and I find it hard to believe you know as much as I and I will not disagree with a tax attorney. I guess since you are disagreeing with your post, the whole thing is BS.

Congratulations! You have just admitting your post is BS.

Do you even hear yourself? I gave no such advice. And I certainly never said it about anyone running for POTUS.

So, attorneys advised against Trump releasing his tax returns until after the audit. That sounds like good advice. It wouldn't be prudent for him to release the returns against the advice of attorneys, would it? Or do you think it would be prudent?

If you think he should release the returns against the advice of attorneys, please let us know your reasons why, Thank you.

Obviously you can't. This is what your article says:

"While the IRS says anyone can release their own tax information at any time, some tax lawyers advised it may not be in an individual's best interest to do so."

Now, I'm pretty sure Trump has tax lawyers lined up at the ready. Do you think they advised against releasing the returns until after the audit? Well, of course they did! Even if they didn't, he's smart enough to know not to release them until after the audit... he wouldn't need lawyers to tell him that.

Jeez..... tax lawyers advise against it. Just what do you expect him to do? Do you want him to go against sound legal advice? It's no wonder you're Queen of the Morons.

That's not what Trump said. It's not what the IRS said that is in question here. How is it that this concept is going right over your head? Trump never, ever, said anything about his lawyers telling him not to release his taxes. You're just going to have to accept that. It's the truth and you can't prove anything different because the only place it is any different is in the dark regions of your delusional mind. But feel free to pour through last night's name calling match and find where he said anything different. Good luck.

    Did you bother to read your post? It specifically states that;
One of those two statement has to be a lie. Just which is it?

Sorry, Queen of the Morons, but if his tax lawyers (I'm sure he has plenty) advised him against releasing his returns and he wants to follow sound legal advice, then he certainly can't release them now (unless he goes against sound legal advice, of course). So, I'll ask you again: Do you want him to go against sound legal advice?

You sound like one of those advocates of releasing tax returns against sound legal advice. Maybe that's why you're a pawn and he's a billionaire.

Trump's too scared to release them. He knows they will be scrutinized. He's using this as an excuse not to release them, like the pathetic republican coward he is.
