"Mandatory Voting" and "Mandatory Voter Registration" are two, very distinctly different things.

I couldn't care less about how states register voters.

Now, how do feel about forcing people to vote?

Would you agree or would you disagree that forcing people to vote takes away their right to vote?

I wouldn't even remotely agree that mandatory voting takes away anyone's right to vote. It does take away their option to not vote without some as yet undefined consequence. It doesn't prevent anyone from voting which amounts to some pretty twisted Right wing double-speak.

The "right to vote" also includes the right not to vote. Just like the right to own guns also includes the right not to own guns. The right to practice the religion of your choice includes the right not to practice religion.

Again, you've completely missed the point of what was said. To quote Coitus:

How would mandatory voting "take away" anyone's right to vote? I understand that it does not allow people to "not vote" without some type consequence, but how exactly does it take away anyone's right "to vote"?

Someone is going to have to explain that to me.

So that you might comprehend it, instead of saying "right to vote", I should have said "voting right".

You need to understand what a "right" is. A right is a principle of freedom. Note that the keyword here is freedom. Freedom allows one either to exercise that right or to not exercise that right.

Mandatory voting would take away the freedom the right allows.

Sorry, but I did not miss the point. But someone missed my point!

Do you own a gun? You have the right to own one. Now if they made it mandatory to own guns, what "right" would you have then? Suppose someone made being religious mandatory. What "right" would you have left?

I understand your failed analogy, I don't understand how mandatory voting takes anyone's right to vote away. Skip the nonsense analogies and just tell me how mandatory voting takes anyone's right to vote away as long as Coitus bailed and you jumped in, you explain it for him.

I guess maybe that is the difference between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives say a right give you the option while liberals say a right is mandatory. But then I guess that only happens when the liberals think it will help them.

Let's say the "freedom of Religion" required you to have a religion. You could choose between Christianity, Judaism, or Islam. You don't like any of the three religions, but you don't have the right to not choose one of them.

It's no different than if the "right to vote" requiring every American to choose between Jeb Bush or Hillary Clinton. I don't like either candidate, but I would be required to choose one of the two.

(Obama also wants to lower the voting age to 16. As a 16 year old, I can confirm that 16 & 17 year olds voting is an awful idea)

OK, I said skip the silly analogies. They are a poor substitute for a direct answer. You're the third person to try and fail to answer a really, really simple straight forward question. I don't want to hear analogies, comparisons, like situations that really aren't. Just tell me...

HOW IN THE F#%*^ IS ANYONE'S RIGHT TO VOTE TAKEN AWAY (AS COITUS STATED) BY MAKING VOTING MANDATORY?

This Orwellian double-speak you people rely on should be explained by you if for no other reason than so that you can see how far gone you are. If none of you can answer a simple question, you should just admit it. This is really not that hard.

The right NOT to vote is taken away. I don't like either of the projected candidates, and I know a lot of other people who feel the same way, and if voting is mandatory everyone will have to choose between 2 complete dumbasses in the next election. Picking between Hillary and Jeb for president is like picking which dog turd you want to eat.

Wow, you really ARE thick. Did you not understand my explanation? A person's voting right encompasses the right to vote or to not vote. Mandatory voting completely eliminates the freedom of that right. What part don't you understand?

It takes away the right to abstain. And with that in place, you will find some petty tyrant at the polls saying "Excuse me sir, but you didn't punch a block in all categories. Please go back in so I can register this as a valid vote so you don't get fined." With mandatory compliance comes enforcement. How do you handle that.
So, are we also going to lower the draft age to 16. When they moved it down from 21 to 18 the rational was if you were old enough to get drafted, you're old enough to vote.

You double down on stupidity. How does mandatory voting take away anyone's right to vote as opposed to suffering some consequence for not voting? Whose vote are they taking away? Specifically, who would not be allowed to vote? You can't come up with anyone. You made another stupid statement that you can't defend and all the twisting and spinning can't erase the fact that you are exactly what Orwell's book 1984 predicted personified.

Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language.

Let Oregon have a few years, see how their registration works.

Let Australia go on a few years, see how things work there.

We needn't be in any rush.

And remember-bringing a mass of thoughtless ignoramuses to the poll isn't, on its face, likely to improve things.
