Paul Cameron and me

Paul Cameron is head of the Family Research Council. The research in question is on gays mainly and results in tons of papers and articles in which Cameron claims to prove that we are depraved, predatory, disease-ridden parasites with bad attitudes. The fact that little if any of his output has stood up to examination does not seem to faze him. Cameron was recently interviewed by David Pakman. This interview is the source of the quotes that follow.

Cameron's primary reason for being is to provide a framework of pseudoscience to prop up otherwise unsupportable piles of religious biases and bigotry. His organization is to the religious anti-gay movement what The Institute for Creation Research is to folks who believe that God created everything at once and not all that long ago either.

When it comes to gays, the Bible is pretty unambiguous. What God commands his followers to do to guys who have sex with other guys is kill them. I take this very personally. If the Bible is indeed the inerrant word of the Almighty, then some God-fearing believer should have offed me a long time ago. But I'm still around. I can't believe that their laxity bodes well for them on Judgment Day.

Initially, even Cameron himself seems to come off as being a little wobbly on the death to gays dictate. What he has coyly said is, “I’m not advocating the death penalty. I’m saying I’m open to it, depending on what the legislature of a given country decides.”

That seems in line with the approach of some of his Bible-thumping fans. The more sophisticated and politically savvy ones know better than to openly call for my execution on the strength of holy writ alone, at least in this county. But when it's on the table in places like Uganda, well...

The thing about Cameron is that he does not quote the Bible, he gives his opinion as a researcher. He's no theologian. He's a psychologist. Of sorts. Therein lies his usefulness to the Christian Right. He takes the long way around, bypassing the Bible, but he gets them where they want to go. When he's done, they can say, "Look, the Bible proscriptions regarding homosexuality are not just the prejudices of a pack of Bronze Age goatherds. There's science behind it"

“One must understand," Cameron says, "those who act on their homosexual desires or interests usually end up being parasites on society, and parasites that are very dangerous for society, not only because they take far more than they contribute to society, but they particularly injure children,”

So according to Cameron, since I act on my homosexual "desires" chances are very high that I'm a parasite on society and as such I'm very dangerous and I take away far more than I contribute. And not only that, I'm also out injuring kids since apparently that's what parasites on society do.

Cameron states this unequivocally as fact. It would be interesting to have him map out the data supporting the sexually active gay = dangerous parasite on society = child molester sequence. It sounds to me like he begins by talking about me but then immediately switches his focus to the Catholic Church, but I'm probably not quite following him.

He continues on the kid theme. “Some [homosexuals, aka parasites on society] have molested, raped – however you wish to put it – 20 or more kids. I would say once you go beyond two or three or four, that’s pretty severe."

I'm not quite sure exactly what his thinking is here. He seems to be saying that while he would frown on any molestation and or rape, in his view you haven't really gone over the top until you've racked up more than four victims or so. It seems a little twisted to me. Does it count if it's the same kid four times, or does it have to be a different kid each time? It's too bad he doesn't elaborate on this.

Anyway, to recap. Guys having sex with guys makes said guys parasites on society. Parasites on society in addition to being parasites on society also molest and/or rape kids. Therefore execution might not be a bad way to deal with guys who have sex with other guys.

I've got to say, God's law regarding gays seems quite matter-of-fact and to the point. If you're a guy and you sleep with guys we will kill you. Leave it to eggheads like Cameron to take the torturous route to the same place. But this is 2014 and religious fanatics feel they have to give their sick parochial bigotry a coating of fake science in the hope of making it easier to swallow, hence their need for people like Paul Cameron.

I'll agree with Cameron on one point. Some so-called "gay" people I know are "depraved, predatory, disease-ridden parasites". But, then again, some so-called "straight" people I know are "depraved, predatory, disease-ridden parasites". I believe it's a spectrum-wide description, not just for "gay" people.

....Why does it make any sense to single out gays for condemnation and ignore straight people doing exactly the same behaviors? The real issue for people like Cameron isn't the behavior, it's the gay thing. If I had to put money on it, my guess is that people like Cameron are concealing their own gay tendencies by attacking those that remind them most that they have these feelings they can't acknowledge.

The irony here, and I have gay friends that will acknowledge this, there are just deeply repressed gays that are making life as bad as they can for "outted" gays because of their own issues and they use religion as a whipping post. Look how many of these televangelists, and priests, and ministers end up coming out as gay. I'm not talking about the pedophiles, I'm talking about the gays. They don't abuse children the way some of these idiots portray them but they do live as celibate gays or they slip out the back door and find male prostitutes.

Are you asking that of me or of Paul Cameron? I didn't single anyone out. If you're asking Mr. Cameron, well, I can't answer for him.

I'm not a psychiatrist, so I can't address that issue. Your guess is as good as mine.

Most "gay" people I know are fairly laid-back and couldn't care less what people think of them or the reasons why. It doesn't seem to be an issue to them. Perhaps they just haven't expressed that openly to me, but my "gay" friends and acquaintances couldn't seem to care less, honestly.

I couldn't agree with you more (make note of the date and time - this is a rare occasion). We could go on for hours about why there are so many "gay" people in the clergy. If society in general were more accepting of "gays", members of the clergy (or any other group for that matter) wouldn't have to "come out".

Now, going back to Paul Cameron and all his beliefs. I've read the Bible myself and what I get out of it is the message of peace and love that Jesus taught. Specifically, peace and love for ALL people. I suppose Mr. Cameron interpreted it differently.

    (puts a pseudo-psychiatrist hat on)...

...Mr. Cameron is gay, and has probably sexually abused a child or two.

    (takes off pseudo-psychiatrist hat)...

He can try to sue me, or whatever, but it will fail, much like his arguments do....because I had "the hat" on.

The anti-gay community in America is dwindling.

    Good.

It's about time people see people as people, and not "they are different in ways that make my wittle head spin."

This is why I have no problem with outing when the outee has created a ministry or a political career out of gay bashing and oppression. As for Cameron, I've caught bits and pieces about a back story there. He even alludes to it in the interview. While he's a sick, twisted fraud he's also I think deserving of some sympathy. I wish people weren't quite so complicated.

To me "homophobes" seem to be morons and other morons follow their words and prejudices.

I wonder what "heterophobes" think of this.

Funny. I typed "homophobes" and "heterophobes" and the latter came up with those red, squiggly spell check lines.

So I guess "homophobes" are real and "heterophobes" aren't.

It's on the internet. It must be true.
