Fox News Poll: Voters blame Clinton and Obama for Benghazi

Majorities of American voters blame former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama for what happened at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

The 2012 terrorist attack took place on the anniversary of September 11 and resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including a U.S. ambassador, at the diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya. A new bipartisan Senate intelligence committee report found that the attacks were preventable and that the State Department, headed by Clinton at the time, had failed to increase security at the U.S. consulate there.

Sixty percent of voters blame Clinton for what happened, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday. That includes 28 percent who blame her “a great deal” and another 32 percent who say she deserves “some” blame.

Click here to view the poll results.

Essentially the same number -- 59 percent -- blames Obama (26 percent “a great deal” and 33 percent “some”).

One voter in five says that the leaders are “not at all” responsible.

About four Democrats in 10 blames each: 41 percent blame Clinton, and 38 percent blame Obama. Twice as many Republicans blame the former secretary (80 percent) and the president (80 percent).

Among independents, about six in ten think Clinton (62 percent) and Obama (64 percent) are at least somewhat responsible.

In public statements soon after the assault, Obama administration officials falsely claimed it was a spontaneous reaction to an offensive video, even though they had intelligence reports that the attacks were connected to terrorist groups tied to al Qaeda. The new poll asks voters what they think motivated the administration’s misleading statements.

About half think it was to protect Obama politically (49 percent). The rest split between saying the White House just made a “mistake” (22 percent) and that they did it to protect America (19 percent).

Republicans (74 percent) are far more likely than independents (46 percents) and Democrats (26 percent) to think the administration was protecting Obama politically.

The Fox News poll is based on landline and cell phone interviews with 1,010 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide and was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R) from January 19-21, 2014. The full poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

This does not bode well for Hillary should she choose to run in 2016. Fully sixty percent blame her (and rightfully so, in my opinion) for the deaths of 4 Americans in Benghazi. After all, the bipartisan report states that the attacks were preventable and that Hillary failed to increase security.

Most telling is that even Democrats are coming on board with the fact that the administration lied about the attacks and did so in order to protect Obama politically. More than one-quarter of Democrats polled (26%) believe it.

By the time the elections roll around, they and THEIR media will have it all blamed on Bush.

FOX has a very unique way of polling. They start with the answer they want and fit the question to that answer. This is polling all right...push polling.

Fox News’ unique approach to polling

Major news organizations conduct polling and eagerly tout the results, but as regular readers know, Fox News’s polling operation is … what’s the word I’m looking for … unique.

Take the results, for example, from the news network’s latest national survey, published this morning. It included this truly extraordinary gem:
“In the aftermath of the attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya, the Obama administration falsely claimed it was a spontaneous assault in response to an offensive online video, even though the administration had intelligence reports that the attacks were connected to terrorist groups tied to al Qaeda.”
Remember, this is part of a question in a poll conducted by an ostensible news organization. It went on to ask respondents, “Which of the following do you think best describes why Obama administration officials gave false information?”

Got that? In a poll that’s supposed to be a legitimate measurement of public attitudes, Fox News tells respondents what to think and then asks them to reflect on the “facts” Fox News has presented to them in the least-objective way imaginable.

Respondents were then asked how much they blame former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the attack in Benghazi, followed by a question about how much they blame President Obama. There were no questions about how much the public might blame the perpetrators of the attack, presumably because that falls well outside the agreed upon narrative.

The more one considers the details of Fox News polling, the more amazing the operation appears.

My colleague Mike Yarvitz flagged another gem from a Fox News poll several months ago:
“The Internal Revenue Service admitted it targeted Tea Party and conservative groups for extra scrutiny. How concerned are you that the government’s surveillance program designed to track terrorists using phone and Internet records will be used in the same way to target specific groups and individuals that may disagree with an administration’s policies?”
Again, note the impressive artistry on display. The question tells you what to think about a manufactured faux controversy, and in this case, quickly changes the subject to raise the specter of government abuse.

As we’ve discussed before, this has been going on for a long while. Indeed, I’ve long marveled at the kind of questions that make their way into a Fox survey, starting in March 2007 when the network’s poll asked, in all seriousness, “Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?” Soon after, another Fox poll asked, “Do you think illegal immigrants from Mexico should be given special treatment and allowed to jump in front of immigrants from other countries that want to come to the United States legally, or not?”

In 2009, a Fox poll asked, “Do you think the United Nations should be in charge of the worldwide effort to combat climate change and the United States should report to the United Nations on this effort, or should it be up to individual countries and the United States would be allowed to make decisions on its own?”

In March 2013, a Fox poll asked, “Former President George W. Bush stopped golfing after the start of the Iraq war. Do you think President Barack Obama should stop golfing until the unemployment rate improves and the economy is doing better?”

As a rule, professional news organizations put a great deal of care into how they word polling questions. To get reliable results that accurately reflect public attitudes, surveys have to be careful not to guide respondents or skew their answers.

It’s possible – just possible – Fox is less concerned about accurately reflecting public attitudes, and more interested in advancing an agenda.

    IQless1 trump supporters are scum

They should just ask the same question a local business man did a while back:

Question: "Is Obama Satan, or just one of His minions."

Yeah, that question is right up their alley.

These are straightforward questions. Do you disagree? Some respondents answered "A Great Deal" while others answered "Not At All". Others gave answers between those extremes. What's wrong with these questions?

    1. As head of the State Department at the time, how much do you blame former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for what happened at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi?

    2. How much do you blame President Obama for what happened at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi?

    The bigger question is:

Exactly what were BO & Hillary doing while the massacre was happening? The attack lasted several hours...there were multiple pleas for help from the victims...there was real-time video & audio being streamed. Why did they leave these people to die?

If you had bothered to read the Senate report, you would be asking these stupid questions. Then again, stupid questions are your forte.

Considering this was the preface to those questions...

“In the aftermath of the attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya, the Obama administration falsely claimed it was a spontaneous assault in response to an offensive online video, even though the administration had intelligence reports that the attacks were connected to terrorists groups tied to al Qaeda."

...I'd say that they got the answers they wanted.

Well, I guess I missed that on the first & second reads. Why don't you give us the page number where it tells us what BO & Hillary were doing between the hours of 9:40 pm (when the attacks began) until 5:15 am while our people were being masscared and pleading for help.

You seem to have a problem with the preface to the questions. Do you dispute the preface even though it presents the facts as outlined by the Senate Report?

Really, after all, you're entitled to your own opinions, but you're not entitled to your own facts.

What I, or any credible pollster would dispute, is a push poll pretending to be some type of actual poll. It isn't. If you're too dumb to know what a push poll is and don't care to find out, then wallow in your own ignorance dumb-dumb.

Those aren't the questions I posed...but you knew that, didn't you?

I'm curious as to exactly what BO & Hillary were doing in the 7+ hours of the attack as our people were pleading for help and being massacred.

I think Hillary was having her nails done and texting funny memes to the ambassador in Benghazi and Obama was shooting hoops and making prank phone calls to white people.

Again, what do you think they were doing? And how do you know?

I will bet that is exactly his point. He does not know or think he knows. And he does not know BECAUSE this "open and transparent" administration is the most secretive ever!

BTW, don't take my word. (I am sure you won't.) Ask Jill Abramson - a very liberal reporter for the liberal NY Times.

So, you've given up the "in was in the report" thing?

Why shouldn't we know what the POTUS & Sec of State were doing in the 7+ hours while our people were being killed? Wasn't it Hillary who raised the 3:00 am call question in the last election? If the ability to handle a situation was important to her, why shouldn't it be important to the rest of us?

So YOU admit the HE doesn't know and then you move on to denigrate the Administration for not being open enough. Is that considered an argument?
Because I have no idea what you are doing right now because you are not very open so I'll just assume that you have your hands in your pants and watching porn. I wouldn't have to assume this but you are just not being open and transparent. Maybe you should post some pictures from your favorite activity so that we can all trust your motives. What say you? See how this innuendo nonsense works against you?
