I went to the Grand Opening of a friend's new restaurant today and there were 4 protestors holding these red signs that said "Shame, Shame, Shame". I asked one of the protestors why they were protesting & she said it was because union labor wasn't used in the construction of the new restaurant. Fair enough. But then I asked her what union she was in. Answer? Not in a union. I asked her how much she was getting paid to stand in the 90 degree heat, holding the sign. Answer? $8.00/hr. In fairness, one of the sign holders was related to a union member & that's how the 4 came about the jobs.
The takeaway? The union is hiring non-union workers to protest a local business owner not hiring union labor...and paying far less than any union scale. Hmmmm

Assuming that this isn't yet another conveniently made up story posted as a lesson to all those who have better sense than to even read it, I just have to ask.... Is protesting a union job? Or might that fall under the guise of a temporary worker? Seems to me that even if this story isn't total bull crap, I seriously doubt that there are protesters that have formed a union anyplace in the country.

Tell my uncle that. The picket line, in essence, killed him.

Don't forget, the people who provide you the privilege to disagree with what unions have provided for you, are all union members themselves.

    That's quite a stretch, isn't it?

Dunno, but if the union is hiring people to protest a business' failure to hire union workers wouldn't it make sense they hire union employees to do it?

David this is the free market at work, those protesting were selling there labour so sorry but you can not complain if they seen a way to make a few bucks  For the unions to hire other union members then they would have had to go to the Actors union (possibly the protesters were members of that union LOL)

I don't believe that there is any such thing as a professional union protester. How would that even work? Would their only job be to protest? Your complaint makes absolutely no sense here.

The first morning I woke up in Philly this past trip, there was a union protest outside of the hotel I was staying in. Philly is a big union town. They set up a sound system and blasted a repetitive message that included a baby crying it's lungs out. Nice to wake up to. I took a video of them and then asked them what the protest was about. They told me some of the issues and that although the staff were union and there were no problems the people doing the renovation work were not union. They told me a couple of things that were not true like the hotel had black mold. I then spoke with the hotel management and they told me a few things that were not true also. I simply asked that I be moved to the back side of the hotel so that the protest didn't wake me so early in the morning. I found both management and the union less than honest with me. I can't say that I sympathized with either group but I understand that neither side was really left with a good option to resolve their differences. If the union didn't put up a fuss, non-union workers would lower wages and benefits for everyone across the board. If the hotel management hires union workers to do the renovation, they end up paying more in renovation costs. Hiring undocumented Mexicans seems like a better deal in their eyes. It's pretty simple to understand and blaming either side exclusively is just partisan nonsense.

I'm union but I've never heard of a union hiring either non union or other union members to protest anything. In fact, I've never heard of a union holding a protest, only strikes. My union can't even strike because of standing injunctions based on their assertion it would compromise national security and be detrimental towards the economy. Personally I'd rather work than strike anyhow.

I did not know such things happened but if its on Huffington Post it must be true.

Anyway, I must say that I think I will probably look at the various protests I see occasionally (the last one was 4 dudes with Shame On You Long John Silvers signs) in a different light now. Probably just someone doing their job. Nothing to see here. Move along. ;)
