One way to think of the tea-party is to imagine libertarians running amok....which is basically what libertarians do for fun anyway, so why the name-change?
Before my time, but I get the point. I differ in that, as President, he wasn't writing law, as legislators do, and that he wasn't forcing his religious beliefs onto others to the extent that I'm talking about. He wasn't demanding that everyone follow his particular religious beliefs, and he wasn't calling other beliefs repugnant (or "evil", if you will), as some legislators and leaders do today. They're saying to be a Democrat is against their beliefs, and that isn't true. It suggests to the weak-minded christians in America that Democrats are not christians, and can not be christians, which is not true. Those christians who are not weak-minded can see the difference, but some won't, and that's just promoting a religion. It promotes faith over substance on the issues, and that's why I have an issue with it. I don't want religion dictating to me, but it does, through law, and that pisses me off. The last thing I want is more promotion of religion in politics. I want it put where it belongs: in individual's personal lives.
I grew up in Connecticut and couldn't get a haircut on Sunday. You couldn't buy a car on Sunday, either. When I was old enough, I couldn't by beer or liquor after 8:00 PM (M-Sat) or on Sunday. As far as I know, that's still the law. They are based on the old "Blue Laws".
I'm not a fan of many laws, as I see them as being the religious exertion of political power. I call them "morality laws", and Blue Laws are certainly a part of that. I'm not an anti-religious crusader. I believe religion can have a place in people's lives on an individual and personal level. Where I get angry at it is when they force a religious belief on others, as with the Blue Laws, or Sharia Law. In Afghanistan, if you attempt to convert from Islam, you are put to death, for example. That's current law, or was shortly after the new government was established by us there, and christians are not much better at restraining their abuses. Though they rarely kill people anymore, they do influence scores of laws, and the result is religious indoctrination, via common law. It's subtle, and most people don't recognize it as such, but it is subversive of freedoms, whether people see it or not. We are, or were, taught that stores are to be closed on Sundays, and learned to accept it without really knowing why, until we were told that they are closed because that's the way things are here. It's subtle, and subverts the right to have stores open on Sundays. Now that most stores ARE open on Sundays, it's not as big an issue for most people...except for the few who continue to believe they shouldn't be, as it's against their religious views.
I'm the last person you'll ever see defending Sharia Law. However, there were some very secular reasons for adopting the Blue Laws. Back then, the church was like a labor union. If you wanted to take Sunday off to attend church and no one else did, you wouldn't stay in business very long. Everyone that wanted to survive would have to work everyday for the same amount of business. The Blue Laws permitted certain days/hours off to relax, pray, whatever. Since everyone took the same days off, everyone still competed for the same dollars on a level playing field. Some might say things are better now...while other might say things were better when everyone took Sunday off.
I agree. It really depends on personal preferences though. Some people work 80-hour weeks, and love it, for example. I've worked 60-hour weeks in the past, but it quickly took a toll on my body, I just can't remain healthy when working that long, as the work was brutal, physical labor that didn't allow enough time to rest and recuperate from the day's labor. Currently, work-hours requirements are always abused. I've always worked every holiday, nights, etc. with little to no bonus pay, and no respect from bosses for the trouble. The night-shifts are the worst offenders, IMO. It should be a minimum of time-and-a-half for what the hardship it is for most people, but the most I ever got was an extra fifty cents (at minimum-wage to begin with)...but I usually got nothing.
I worked night shifts, holidays, weekends, double shifts, triple shifts, back-to-backs.. you name it. I didn't complain because I knew what the job would be like before I was hired. I also knew what the pay would be. If I didn't like either aspect, I didn't have to take the job. Stop complaining about getting "no respect" from the boss. He's not required to give you any. He only needs to make certain you do the job properly and, if you don't, find someone who will. Your whining and moaning gets old after a while. Did you hire on to the job knowing that you would only make minimum wage? If so, why are you complaining that you only ever got "an extra fifty cents"? I presume that the knowledge you hold in your brain is not some incredibly valuable asset that the rocket science industry needs, is it? I had a math teacher tell me once, "Someone has to take out the garbage" meaning that there will always be a need for persons with limited intellect who will need to perform the more menial duties in society. Unfortunately for you, that task has befallen you. But, instead of groaning all the time about your lot in life, count your blessings and try to see the cup as half full. Hey, in a few months everyone in the country will be burdened with a new tax in order to take care of you! You just hit the jackpot, buddy.
That's the reason you need to check out the Tea Party! With a little self discipline, we can not only balance the budget, but reduce the national debt to zero...all the while protecting the most vulnerable among us. Not only will the Repealment of the 16th Amendment (w/ a switch to a National Sales tax) produce these results, every penny of overtime or night shift premium goes directly into your pocket! I hate it when I earn 1.5x for overtime, and the government keeps it...because "I'm rich and not paying my fair share". It's not the "evil corporation" that's disrespecting you by giving you a job; it's the government that's disrespecting you by taking away the fruits of your labor.
I worked more than one 100+ hour weeks more than once, more years rotating sift than I cared to, and about the only holiday I have not worked is Christmas. I survived. BTW, I never worked as, worked with, or even heard of a maintenance manager who earned less than minimum wage and you supposedly have.
Both have their benefits, the government providing the necessary infrastructure that allows for the creation of jobs, the businesses providing those jobs. You blame the government for taking taxes out of your check, I blame the businesses for doing the absolute minimum required by law. One has our best interests at heart, the other has their own best interests at heart. I don't expect you to agree lol
I don't object to government levying taxes to pay for essential services. I DO object to direct taxation; it's destroying the country on levels I don't expect a Liberal to comprehend. Direct taxation is the cause of everything Liberals complain about, but they're too fixated on simply killing the "Golden Goose"...(they need someone to blame for their lot in life). It's not the job of Government or Business to look after our "best interests"...or what Liberals believe to be our "best interests". Business' responsibility is to look after the "best interests" of their stockholders. Government's responsibility it to provide "equal opportunity/protection" under the law for all citizens. It's up to each citizen to look after their own "best interests". If they don't, they have no one to blame but themselves. As we achieve our goals, we should honor the Grace of God and help those less fortunate...but that obligation is between each of us and our Maker...it's not the role of Government to mandate morality (an argument I've heard you make many times).
Yeah, so when a crippled old-woman is dying, your response is "Work harder!" You and Coin should date.
Yakpoo, don't even mention "God" to these liberals. Or "Jesus", "creator", "maker", "almighty", etc. I'm surprised they haven't ganged up on you yet. It's coming, though. According to them, mankind began as a puddle of goo and only evolved thanks to socialism and Jane Fonda. IQLessThan1, I haven't read a single valid response from you regarding anything Yakpoo has posted. So far, he's been back on the forum for a couple of weeks and he has completely eviscerated you. Oh... sorry... I didn't mean to throw a big word at you; here's the definition of "eviscerate": View attachment 1899
Don't be sad, Coin can comfort you. Bring an image of an ant crying-out in pain...it makes him happy to see things like that.
Don't Liberals believe in an "ultimate reality" they believe should be imposed on others...through law? Why does it "piss you off" when you feel one party imposes its "ultimate reality", but perfectly OK when the other party does exactly the same thing? re·li·gion noun \ri-ˈli-jən\ :a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices re·li·gious adjective \ri-ˈli-jəs\ : relating to or manifesting faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity I gotta say...you really sound like a Tea Partier to me...(Congrats!)
