I think you might be on to something.

In a 1970 NYT interview, Nixon advisor and Republican strategist Kevin Phillips said "The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe* whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are" By that time this was hardly a revelation.

It had been no secret to Goldwater early on and certainly to most Republicans by 1968, that Blacks would increasingly vote Democratic as long as the Democratic Party as a whole opposed segregation, and supported education, economic justice and other issues important to the Black electorate. The Northern Democrats were also reaching out to liberal Republican voters who for their part were finding Democratic positions congenial as economic and social conservatives began to consolidate their control over the Republican party.

With the Democratic Party evolving in a direction unacceptable to conservatives of all stripes including many who would later be called Reagan Democrats, disaffected Dixiecrat racists were migrating to the Republican Party or to third parties such as George Wallace’s American Independent Party.

Nixon’s attempt to capitalize on Southern alienation in the 1968 election by stressing law and order, “states rights” (code for you-know-what) and opposing busing was successful to a degree, but mainly in Southern fringe states. It was tricky. Go too far in accommodating Southern racism and you run the risk of turning off more moderate voters in other regions. On the other hand, being seen as not really on board with the program gets you nowhere in Dixie.

As it was, many white Southern voters who would have gone with Nixon otherwise, ended up favoring the more hard core and unambiguously segregationist message of George Wallace and Curtis LeMay. The American Independent party captured almost the same states that had gone to Goldwater in 1964, adding Arkansas, but losing South Carolina to Nixon. The AIP nearly cost Nixon the election. In the end he squeezed past Humphrey by just a couple of points in the popular vote.

In 1972, with Wallace out of the picture following an attempt on his life and no other serious third party challenges, or even much of one from the Democrats the election was Nixon's oyster. He swept the South and almost everywhere else. That silly break-in was so unnecessary.

*For Davy, the word “Negrophobe” means one who fears or dislikes black people.

So you can't quite bring yourself to agree with little Davy that it was the Republicans that were the force behind civil rights, but you can try to change the subject. Typical true believer. You guys are so funny when we nail you and your nonsense to the wall. I just love to watch you guys slither away with your tails between your legs if only metaphorically by avoiding answering direct questions, changing the subject, and posting 11 year old editorials that call Ann Coulter "incomparable", that she is. Run Forest Run! :D

It seems also that nearly every black voter in the country has returned the favor the Republicans did for them by voting Democratic. Gee! I wonder why they would do that? Perhaps they resented being given civil rights by the Republicans? Could be?

Next, little Davy will claim that the Republicans are the ones that were helping the poorest people in society while the Democrats did nothing.

The "incomparable" Ann Coulter? She's not totally without peers. Limbaugh and Savage come to mind.

C'mon now, you can't post stuff like this...the libs can't handle it.

I can certainly comprehend the fact you've backed off the "democrats are responsible for Civil Rights" fallacy and began using "progressive" a bit more. Who told you to do that?

I know, but I couldn't help myself. I have to smack them around with the truth in order to shock them back into reality.

The problem, of course, is the truth usually interferes with their truth (or at least the "truth" they've been told to believe).

It is just a misrepresentation to say "Democrats" were against civil rights and you know the word games you are playing here. You are not fooling anyone. You seem to have ignored that progressives are the real changing force in this country not conservatives. You try and use word games the same way Okie uses word games the same way your entire side uses word games to ignore the truth. You aren't fooling anyone. We know which side is for more inclusiveness and which side demonizes gays, minorities, women, immigrants, and every other group that isn't some ideal of white America and it is your side. Sorry that you are just too damn ignorant to realize what exactly you stand for. It doesn't surprise me though. You are an ignorant lot.

So, since when did identifying a party by it's name become a "word game", huh?
