Rick Perry asks Obama for a ‘quick turnaround’ on federal aid after explosion

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on Thursday declared a disaster area and said he planned to request federal funds in response to an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Waco that may have killed as many as 15 people.

At a press conference, the governor thanked President Barack Obama for calling for offer quick action after Wednesday night’s explosion.

“Last night was truly a nighmare scenario for that community,” Perry said. “President Obama called from Air Force One as he was en route to Boston… We greatly appreciate his call, and his gracious offer of support, of course, and the quick turnaround of the emergency declaration that will be forthcoming, and his offer of prayers.”

As a Republican candidate for president in 2012, the Texas governor often railed against federal spending.

Just think about how Republicans, especially from the south, treated the good folks of New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy.

They have no problem crawling to the Federal government for aid when they're hit by disasters. That's fine. But don't try to shaft people in New York and New Jersey when they get slammed by hurricanes.

    Just sayin'

Do you know how much pork was in that relief bill for Sandy? If memory serves me. there was $15B for relief and $45B pork. What the HELL did $150 million for Alaskan fisheries have to do with Sandy? I seriously doubt Gov. Perry is asking for 4 times what he wants just for his share of pork.

Another post from our resident far left parrot trying to score political points in the face of tragedy. Sad.

And this is a classic example of just how badly you fail to do so.

I find it curious that Perry hasn't turned to a higher power. Let God deal with it. Let the Almighty shoulder the burden. Remember, all things are possible through prayer. If they ask The Lord for help I'm sure that He will fix everything. If your faith is strong you don't need help from Washington.

Are you just as willing to mock Obama for expressing his faith? I saw where he attended & spoke at a church service for the Boston Marathon bombings on Thursday.

Of course I am. Obama. Perry. You. Mother Teresa. Although indications are that Mama T was kind of conflicted about the God thing. Oh thou of shaky faith. Or is it, "thee"? Be that as it may, have you got any other questions?

So since it is a private company that is responsible for this mess how about the company footing the bill? Assuming of course that God indicates that he is not interested.

Lets see not. The company that just got blown to smithereens I am sure will be just floating in money to fulfill everyone's needs - NOT.

No insurance? No assets? Nothing? Well then I guess it's up to God, isn't it. Or the state of Texas. Texas can take care of its own, can't it? Texas don't need no stinkin' Washington do-gooders. Wonder how the fire season is going to be this year. The next thing you know Perry will be whining about that.

"Disaster", "Relief" and "Tragedy" are interesting words don't you think?

All depends on one's definition I suppose but when it comes to a "disastrous, tragedy" States always seem to plead to the Feds for "relief".

No insurance? I doubt they had enough to cover everything. Even for what they had, it will be years before it is settled with the lawyers taking most of it.
No assets? Have you seen the pictures? And you ask if they have any asset - or more to the point, any left?
Nothing? Again, have you seen the pictures?
Well then I guess it's up to God, isn't it. Since you do not believe in God, I will assume you are referring to your god. I think Obama is who Perry has asked for help.

So the plant was their only asset? Do we know that? There are no investments, no other holdings, no cash reserves, no other cash flow? If that is indeed the case then you're probably right. And you're probably right about the insurance too. Private sector efficiency. Well then it's up to YOUR God and theirs. I have none. Or it's up to the state of Texas. I don't want MY tax dollars going to pay for some company's stupidity and possible criminal mismanagement. Not to mention the stupidity of all those people who chose to live in close proximity to an operation like that. Texas is short of land all of a sudden? I love the way RW personal responsibility goes right out the window when they get in trouble like this.

And by the way, regarding your Obama comment, I used to think you just stupidly didn't get it regarding my views on Obama, but now I think you are dishonest. Don't like him, didn't vote for him, don't approve most of what he does, certainly not in favor of his approving aid for West, Texas.

    Blah

    IQless1 trump supporters are scum

To be fair to the governor, he did send several emergency response-type teams (including a few from the Texas National Guard) to provide assistance to those states most affected by Hurricane Sandy.

But I'm sure that he, along with the senators and congressmen from Texas, will go the normal route and ask for federal funds, even if they are against such funding...for others.

We are not about being fair here, mister. I've already had to speak to Clembo about this. I'm trying to keep you guys from getting reported for balance and civility. Work with me, okay?

Well...I'm confused. Republicans think that any citizens that need help recovering are entitleists but a multi billion dollar corporation that fought for years to end regulation and won, and then blows itself up, is entitled to taxpayer money to rebuild. Hypocrisy isn't even the correct name for this, but I try to keep things at least pg13 here.

Now I am confused. Just how is helping the people pay their hospital bills, repair/rebuild their houses, live while the town recovers power and gas, etc. helping the company? Oh, but the Democratic Emergency Relief bill for Sandy included $150M for Alaska fisheries, $2.9B for Gulf coast flood control, $58M for planting trees, etc. And I though Sandy only hit the Northeast coast. I wonder how that affected the Alaska fisheries. And then there is that word EMERGENCY. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that only about $9 billion of the $60.4 billion proposed by Democrats would be spent over the next nine months.

Why don't you look up what people have to do to qualify for disaster relief in order to receive any. They don't just hand out checks. Typically, 1 in 5 people effected by disaster receive any kind of relief. Think thats not fact...visit New Orleans.
