This Sheriff is going to take some heat.

‘With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option,’ he adds. ‘You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there.’

‘People are responsible to play a role in their own safety, with the help of law enforcement,’ Clarke said. ‘I'm here to do my part, but we have fewer and fewer resources. We're not omnipresent, and we have to stop giving people that impression.’

I have a feeling he believes in the saying ...When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. ;)

Funding is the real issue. Clarke is a "grandstander" though, so it comes off as just dumb (see: "Sarah, for the love of god, shut the hell up, your making my ears bleed, Palin").

I get conservatism, but I don't get underfunding everything in America ...and expecting your life to improve because of the extra money in your pocket. That's fine for the individual, but America is also about community, and community takes care of each other...even the "dumb" ones (see "conservatism" above).

Urging people to arm themselves simply exchanges the crime of breaking and entering for the crime of domestic violence.

    From your article:
-Minnesota father charged for threatening his daughter with AK-47 'because she got a B'

I have to wonder if dad would have broken out the RPG for a "C"? Hum?

Will this sheriff take some heat? Probably from some pansy liberals. For a citizen able to defend himself when confronted by a violent criminal, when was calling 911 and waiting for a response EVER the best option?

So anyone who disagrees with your position on this issue must, absolutely must, be a pansy liberal. Because no one else would want trained policemen to actually be funded at an effective level to do their jobs. Why is it that I can't help thinking that all gun nuts want to do is return to the days of the wild west when a gun was the only law you needed? Funding is the issue here not the Second Amendment but when your only answer is more guns you can't even hear the message much less the solution and you certainly can't see anything but your political enemies. You're a sad narrow-minded ideologue and it shows.

    Funny story,

About 3 months ago I called the local police department because there was a man who appeared to be having seizures in the middle of the village park across the road from my mother's house. They said "ok we'll send a car over." Within 30 seconds, 2 patrol cruisers and 2 SUV's arrived, flashed their spotlights on the guy, 1 got on the loudspeaker and told the man to stand still and comply with all commands, and 2 other cops pointed their guns at him while the 4th approached cautiously. All that for a man having a seizure? lol. It turns out the man had escaped from the local looney hospital, and wasn't having a seizure, but was rolling in the grass and dirt and singing Hebrew songs. Either way, the response time was impeccable.

Its just that Right-wingers don't want to pay for things like cops, bridges, roads, water treatment, etc. They dream of living in GlennBeckistan where there are no taxes and if they want to cage up their family in the basement, well, that's their business. Right-wing utopia.

What I find interesting about some of the responses I have read in the news is the guy is basically railing against budget cuts (which liberals should love), telling people that they should take a gun safety course (which liberals should also like) and is telling people to think about having a gun for home defense (which liberals assure everyone that they don't want to do away with).

And he is in no way telling people to go hunt down 'strangers of a different color' in their neighborhood like that gated community guy did. But he is painted as 'Dirty Harry', irresponsible, incompetent, etc .

I can pretty much guarantee that, in a 911 call, we would have multiple cops here in seconds and multiple backups from the neighboring town(s) a minute or two later.

But I live in a small town community and not a segregated ghetto in a big city like Milwaukee.

Anyone planning on visiting Chicago anytime soon had better think twice. Or at least arm themselves if they plan on visiting the Windy City:
