    I am just curious, but how many of these shooting have involved "high powered guns" - and I am not counting hunting rifles? And then ow many have involved mentally ill? Not that I up to date info, but I know of none where the shooter(s?) were not in need of mental help with the possible exception of McVeigh and that was not even a gun.

    I think by definition, you have to be mentally ill to shoot up any group of unarmed people. I can show you the number that used high power weapons.

    Now for the fun. What constitutes "semiautomatic"? What constitutes "assault weapons"? Your link conveniently neglected to define them.

    I'm no gun expert. Ask someone who is.

    Don't feel bad. Most of the people espousing gun control cannot do so either, but in order to regulate both "semiautomatic" gun and "assault weapons", someone has to define them. And, don't get me wrong. I doubt I could define them either, but that is the crux of the disagreement.

    Henceforth, the gun control nuts will just try to ban all of them and be done with it.

    They obviously will not succeed in banning them all. The question is where in the middle will it fall. Personally, I cannot see a use for any citizen to have armor piercing ammo or 100 round magazines, but even at that, there is still a lot of ambiguity.

    There is a data table on the MJ cite I referenced that details the types of guns used.

    Kids and Guns: The Facts

    Each year, there are 34,000 gun-related deaths in the U.S. How many of those deaths are children, and has that number increased in the last few years? Here are the facts.
    Safety Expert Gavin de Becker has found in researching his books, The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Giftthat:
    • Everyday, about 75 American children are shot. Most recover –- 15 do not.
    • The majority of fatal accidents involving a firearm occur in the home.
    • Gunshot wounds are the single most common cause of death for women in the home, accounting for nearly half of all homicides and 42 percent of suicides.
    • An adolescent is twice as likely to commit suicide if a gun is kept in the home.
    • More teenage boys in America die from gunfire than from car accidents.
    • Gunshot wounds are now the leading cause of death for teenage boys in America (white, African-American, urban, suburban).
    Researchers at familyeducation.com have collected the following statistics on kids and guns:
    • Twenty-nine percent of high-school boys have at least one firearm; most are intended for hunting and sporting purposes.
      Six percent say they carry a gun outside the home.
      The National Institute of Justice, 1998
    • From 1980 to 1997, gun killings by young people 18 to 24 increased from about 5,000 to more than 7,500.
      During the same period, gun killings by people 25 and older fell by almost half, to about 5,000.
      The US Department of Justice
    • There are about 60 million handguns in the United States.
      About 2 to 3 million new and used handguns are sold each year.
      US Senate Statistics
    • Nearly 500 children and teenagers each year are killed in gun-related accidents.
      About 1,500 commit suicide.
      Nearly 7,000 violent crimes are committed each year by juveniles using guns they found in their own homes.
      Senator Herb Kohl, sponsor of the safety lock measure.
    • In 1994, every day, 16 children age 19 and under were killed with guns and 64 were wounded in this country.
      National Center for Health and Statistics, 1996

    Sorry, but I still see no definition of "semiautomatic" or "assault weapons". However, what I did notice was that nearly all of them had "prior signs of mental illness".

    And, BTW, you might choose to post statistic from this decade at least.

    I could post more current statistics but they would only make my case stronger since gun deaths have increased in the last ten years. By 2015, that's two years from now, gun deaths will surpass car accident deaths. Car accident deaths are decreasing while gun deaths are increasing annually.

    But that is where my problem is. I cannot find any statistic that high;
    2011 31,940 people
    2010 31,328 people
    2009 31,177 people
    2007 31,224 people
    2004 29,569 people
    And all I can find is a decreasing homicide rate from guns;

    Semi automatic is a weapon that can be fired repeatedly without manual rechambering.

    You mean like most every pistol (old time 6 shooter)? And, yes, I have seen the definition of assault rifle. Suffice it to say it included this line;

    According to Wikipedia...

    The reserve militia or unorganized militia, also created by the Militia Act of 1903 which presently consist of every able-bodied man of at least 17 and under 45 years of age who are not members of the National Guard or Naval Militia.(that is, anyone who would be eligible for a draft). Former members of the armed forces up to age 65 are also considered part of the "unorganized militia" per Sec 313 Title 32 of the US Code.

    So, by that law, I should be good to own guns at least until I am 65. ;)
