This Just Hasn't Been A Good Year For Susan Rice

UN Ambassador Susan Rice, already under fire from Republicans, is now taking hits from the left over six-figure investments in the company behind a controversial oil pipeline.

Rice, rumored to be on the short list to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, owns between $300,000 and $600,000 in TransCanada Corp. stock, according to the TheHill.com, which cites Rice's financial disclosure forms. TransCanada is the company whose 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring oil from Canada down to Gulf refineries has been repeatedly delayed and now is in regulatory limbo.

The liberal group RootsAction.org, has started an online petition demanding that Rice "immediately sell every dollar of stock" in the company behind the $7 billion project. Environmentalists say the pipeline would pollute air and water supplies as well as harm fragile ecosystems. Energy industry officials argue that the Keystone XL would be no different from an extensive network of energy pipelines already in place – and some say its state-of-the-art design would make it safer than many of the country’s aging pipelines.

The State Department would have to sign off on the pipeline because it spans the border between the U.S. and Canada.

"It's indefensible that Susan Rice has millions of dollars invested in oil companies and banks that will make huge profits if the State Department gives approval to the XL pipeline," the group says in a statement online.

The website, OnEarth.org, published a story Wednesday on Rice's reported investments in more than a dozen Canadian oil companies and banks that would stand to benefit from the pipeline.

"It’s really amazing that they’re considering someone for Secretary of State who has millions invested in these companies,” Bill McKibben, a writer and founder of the activist groups 350.org and Tar Sands Action, told the website. "The State Department has been rife with collusion with the Canadian pipeline builders, and it’s really distressing to have any sense that that might continue to go on."

Hmmmm.. This story broke yesterday (November 30, 2012) and there isn't anything about it on the MSNBC website (MSNBC). One would think that news this important would be addressed. It's affecting a potential nominee to not only a cabinet position, but someone who would be fourth in line in succession to the presidency.

Wouldn't she simply get rid of her investment before she took the job as SOS like all other politicians regularly do? What you're saying is that if she took the job she would have a conflict of interest. It seems like a non-problem and another non-story from Fox. Let me know when she actaully is Secretary of State and she actually does have a conflict of interest. Besides, isn't the administration sort of anti-Keystone Pipeline? How would that benefit Rice? Is this all you guys can come up with to try and character assassinate this woman? You need to try harder. This is laughable.

And where was the concern from Republicans about Romney's "conflict of interest" issues? Uh huh, crickets.

Ask the liberals the same thing. From the article:

The liberal group RootsAction.org, has started an online petition demanding that Rice "immediately sell every dollar of stock" in the company behind the $7 billion project.

It certainly sounds to me as if THEY believe its a conflict of interest.

It COULD be a conflict of interest IF Susan Rice was the Secretary of State and IF she didn't divest her interests in these Canadian oil companies before accepting the position AND IF she got involved in the negotiations and WASN'T entirely against the idea of the pipeline as this administration has signaled thus far.

Like I said, get back to me when any of this actually happens.

Yeah, I guess she could just put her investments in a blind trust and pretend that she had no knowledge of them like Romney did. That will work too.

Do you have a clue what a blind trust is? That is exactly where BO has his money - including his foreign investment. And I will give you odds, if nominated, that is where Rice's investments will go.

We can't even mourn the tragic loss of four Americans in Libya on 9-11-12, ...the corrupt-arm of the Republican party, the maliciousness of FOX "news", and the idiots who believe them, will not let us.

They've taken a national tragedy and twisted it into a circus of BS, claiming over and over that "the Democrats must have done something insidious, and by GOD we (you know, TRUE Americans) will find out the truth of this conspiracy to fool the American people!

You want to see what TRUE "insidious" people look like? Look in the mirror, you useless piles of S!

How honest and good Republicans can stand for this is beyond my capability to understand. How can they NOT see this for what it is? Are they THAT brain-washed they no longer have the capacity to reason?

I'm hoping not, but I know that there will always be a certain percentage of people who hate Democrats so much they'll refuse to look in the mirror.

Yes, let us use the tragedy of these deaths as political fodder even while they are happening. Then we will continue to beat the same conspiracy theory nonsense into the ground long after anyone cares just to make sure we completely dishonor the service of those brave Americans.

Who said I had a problem with it? All I am saying is that you are a bit (ahem!) hypocritical not objecting to Rice getting a blind trust after all your ranting about Romney's blind trust.

If the deaths of four Americans wasn't a national tragedy before, it is now. Instead of mourning for loss of four lives, we now must mourn the loss of reason and rational thought dominating out society. Today all we have is the "Republican" party's maliciousness that has crippled society, brought it to it's knees.

Congratulations on your victory, @#$%heads, you do realize you yourself are parts of society, don't you? You've successfully engineered the Decline of the Western Civilization, and every one of you is an idiot for doing so.

There is some hope left. With the idiots at FOX continuing to double-down, over and over, on the Benghazi incident, some of their faithful might begin to question their intent. If they do, and I want to believe that some already have, those people who snapped out of their trance and had that epiphany will explain to family members and friends what they've come to realize, and a small grass-roots-type of thing should occur with the one or two people that actually hear them out.

I don't expect masses of Republicans to have that epiphany at this point, but as the country weakens, more and more should. At that point, the grown-ups in the room, us Democrats (I'm a Democrat now, thanks to the "last-straw" of this Benghazi BS), can reverse the damage that the other party has masterminded. It can be done, but not without a super-majority or emergency powers.
