Not that this hasn't been brought up in other states but for the sake of fun let's just talk about Texas.

    Have a quick read.

    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/texas-nationalist-movement-president-outlines-secession-goals-on-hannity/

So let's say Texas secedes and becomes their own country.
They have those big cities, big companies, big money etc. They could certainly make it as their own country couldn't they?

    Maybe not.
How many folks would just up and leave Texas for starters? I could be wrong but I'm betting there would be a fairly large exodus.

How about the big companies. Think they'd all hang around? Unless labor was cheap I doubt it.

How about the Mexican border, the border on the Gulf, the borders with other states that are still part of the US?
Don't depend on the US if it gets ugly folks. It's YOUR problem.

Want to visit relatives outside of Texas? Fine, just have your papers and you MIGHT be under big time scrutiny. You're from Texas after all.

Mexican drug cartels taking over? Good luck with that. The US will guard it's border that surrounds Texas.

Make a living fishing in the Gulf? Don't stray into US waters. We don't know what you're up to.

Roads falling apart? Tough. Fix them yourselves.

Life threatening drought, hurricanes, any natural disaster?
Your problem. We have the same problems too.

Borders? Now that's a problem. Can't have a guard station at every one so we'd have to "end" a lot of rural roads into and out of Texas. Barbed wire could be helpful for the "illegals" from Texas.
Guns too as it is well known that Texans like to be armed. Gotta shoot them first.

I could go on for hours but why? The secession talk is a bunch of non thought out rhetoric put out by morons for the most part.

Texas would have a better chance by becoming a part of Mexico. Would Texans rather live in the US or Mexico?

I'm fairly certain that Mexico would love to add Estado de Texas to it's country.

lol...fun thread clembo. It's funny, but the day BEFORE I heard of the Texas petition, I visited the White House's site and poured over them all lol

Here's the three other Texas petitions I found there:
    1,290 sigs so far.
    8,109 sigs so far.
1,807 sigs so far. And, Amen.

P.S. - The petition you mentioned currently has 115,983 sigs.

BTW, the vast majority of those petitions are just as dumb, but a few are OK. One, asking Obama to visit a sick 8 year old is kinda touching. Another asks to nationalize the Twinkie industry lol

Kinda makes sense I suppose in some assinine way.

If they secede don't mess with them. Let them die a miserable death on their own.

Make sure the children and folks with brains vacate BEFORE secession of course.

    YEE HAW!!!

The whole idea of secession is idiotic, and you'd be amazed at how many people support it...OK, maybe not amazed, more like: roll your eyes and/or shake your head and/or sigh and/or drink alcohol...etc. etc. etc.

But, again...great points in your OP that these people fail to consider.

They came up with the motto, I didn't. I like it though. Texans are some of the friendliest people you'd ever want to meet, but I wouldn't want to mess with them. Then again, there are people all over the country I wouldn't want to mess with.

I really like this point. The idea that, if they were successful, they'd find themselves being treated like Mexico currently is, and that wouldn't sit well with 'em...and they'd STILL have people crossing their border with Mexico LOL

    Don't Tread On Me.

    Like that one too Coin.

I have friends in Texas. I figure all of them would move back if the state seceded.

I have nothing against Texans. I just don't care for idiots and they are all over this country.

One thing you and I have agreed on in the past is the right to own guns. I have one and know you have at least one.

    Good for us.

Your last sentence is too true. In my neck of the woods bring a loud mouthed, gun toting Texan up here then drop him off in the wrong place and he'd be lucky not to get killed by the end of the day.

    I'm serious.

"Don't Mess With Texas" was a slogan created by a Texan ad agency for the Texas DOT to try to convince "bubbas in pickup trucks" and other Texans to stop just tossing their empty beer cans and other garbage out onto the already fairly bleak landscape. It's a message intended for slovenly Texans.

There is undoubtedly more that we agree on Clembo, but on this cyberspace forum it's easy to snipe back-and-forth which doesn't accurately reflect reality. Let me add that if a loud-mouthed, gun toting New Yorker got dropped off in certain parts of Texas, he might share the same fate.

The United States of America are exactly that "United States". We had this argument in the 1860's and the secessionists lost. If you don't like America, you are free to leave. The state stays here. We're not having this argument again. Stupid hicks in rural America don't get to decide to take the ball and go home just because they lost the game.

I don't quite see it that way Joe but I did start the thread for some fun discussion and thus far, actually, it has been.

My real point is that those talking of secession don't seem to be looking at the whole picture IF they actually DID secede.
I just scratched the surface in the OP.

Assuming the numbers IQ put up last night are correct over 115,000 people in Texas have already signed this petition.

Wow! Come up with the right rhetoric and it's easy to get people cranked up.
I'm not a betting man but I would surmise that the vast majority of Texans that have signed the petition have given very little or no thought as to how it could actually be if they succeeded in seceding.

Texas wouldn't be so big anymore.

Not just some Texans, but sooooooo many people in this country put very little thought into the consequences of their actions.
