Another lunatic with a gun set the U.S. record for most deaths in a mass shooting on the campus of Virginia Tech today. The shooter has not been identified but more details are still coming out. Over 30 people are reported dead and that figure could climb. Sad doesn't begin to describe this horror and nothing can explain what could motivate someone to commit this atrocity. If you're religious, pray for them, if not keep the victims in your thoughts today. It could happen anywhere.

I feel for the people that were involved as well as their familes...

What makes me really mad is it just gives the Gun Grabbers another reason to start beating their drums again...

Well, I think the jury is still out on whether this guy legally obtained the guns or not but you do have to remember that the time it takes for a legal law abiding citizen to become a murdering homicidal maniac is the same time it takes to aim and press a trigger. I'm sure the victim's families aren't thinking about the politics of gun ownership at this moment. But I really think the time for that discussion hasn't arrived at least not until the funerals are over.

It is a tragedy of immense porpotions that's for sure and I've said my prayers, but If the murderer had driven a stolen tanker truck full of gasoline or a fully fueled jet airplane into the dorm after locking the doors with chains, this conversation wouldn't even be happening. The choice of weapon made no difference, the fact the lunatic made it past security twice needs to be investigated.

Unfortunately, not one student was an off-duty police officer or had a CCW permit and was packing.

The death count is 33 at the moment. My thoughts are with the families.

Yes it is sad. There should be a three month waiting period to buy a gun legally which would be a built in cooling off period.
But what gets me with this shooting is that it took the police over two hours to do anything. The guy was allowed to walk and shoot without distrubance. From reports I heard the time line was from two to two and a half hours that the police just waited for the SWAT team. Also why not have campus security trained and armed. A large college is like a small city in alot of ways and all of its students are depending on thier first line ofsecurity with uniformed men armed with walkie talkies. We live in a climate, and lets leave politics out, where people do not want to arm security officers because of insurance costs and potential law suits and the police are taught not to respond unless they are the specialized unit for that task.
Anyway, this is another story I will not follow to closely for it seems as no one is learning from the same mistakes. That Colorado High School, the police also just waited outside as shooting occurred inside.
    Crazy.

It's confirmed that 33 people are dead including the gunman who was identified as Cho Seung Hui, a student of the college.

Virginia is one of the easiest states in which to get a CCW permit. However, it does allow colleges (among other places) to ban firearms even to people carrying those permits. Virginia Tech's Board of Trustees did so.

I guess Cho Seung Hui forgot about the ban.

Here's what I think. You can either agree or disagree but this is my opinion. If you are willing to have hand guns as part of your society, you have no place being outraged by acts of violence like Virginia Tech and many other institutions have experienced and should shrug them off as just part of the experience that goes along with owning a gun. Unless our society is willing to ban them outright, we shouldn't be shocked by what some people will do with them. I don't believe that you can be both for gun rights and shocked by their societal usages. You just can't have it both ways because you haven't shot anybody yourself.
I for one, will no longer get indignant or appaulled by these mass killings by fellow Americans as long as hand guns are legal. I won't express sympathy for victims or their families as long as we have legal hand gun laws. I have just run out of the ability to be shocked by these events anymore. I don't own any rifles anymore and I have never owned a hand gun. If you do own a hand gun and think you have the right to be appaulled by these types of mass killings, think again. You're living a logical disconnect.

I was using a very sharp kitchen knife earlier today. I'm still appaulled and saddenned when somebody uses a knife or other tool to murder someone, and possibly chop them into peices...

    I could no more disagree.....

If you make guns illegial, only criminals will have them and they will... This has been proven...

If you ever did get rid of all guns, Criminals kill with somethng else, be it knives, swords, bats, hockey sticks, ketchup packets or whatever....
