Danr, here we are on common ground. The high priced paid bozos in the NBA, MLB and sadly to say, the NFL should have their wages capped at about 100K a year. They can't do anything else so there would be plenty of resumes for the jobs if they walk. What is the carbon load for one big game and what do they contribute to society? Answer to the first part of the question, kilotons. Answer to the second part of the question, zero.

We all know sport in America is about paying people too much money so they can live extravagant life and rape women, fight dogs, fight each other and be role model for American children to become.

This is the typical socialist response to life in general. Socialists are deathly afraid that somewhere, someone is having fun and making money. It drives them crazy. The knowledge that people have voluntarily contracted to provide a service at an agreed upon price that exceeds what the socialist makes causes them to start coughing up blood. They can't handle it. They can't stand freedom.

The carbon issue is irrelevant, but even if it was relevant the carbon load is probably negligible. If people didn't go to the game, they would breathe anyway. If they didn't go to the game, they probably would have gone someplace else. When they turn the lights on at the game, the lights and TV sets are probably turned off at home because the people are at the game. But the carbon issue is irrelevant anyway. It's plant food, not pollution, as has been proven in other threads. But this is irrelevant to the socialists, who substitute believing for thinking.

The outcome of games is changed by refs who are betting on the games. If you have been watching any NBA games I am sure that you have seen these really bad calls, well it turns out that they really were crooked and the teams that got the bad call were not crybabies. the sport is a joke, no better than pro wrestling.

They get paid what the market will pay...certainly they contribute to society...people enjoy watching the games...if they didnt, they wouldnt fetch high prices...its simple supply and demand. If people stopped watching and obsessing on them, then they would be unable to make what they make.

I say more power to them...it isnt that easy doing what they do, being a well oiled machine, in almost constant peak physical condition...

I myself love rugby, soccer and boxing...

nor do I think sports stars have any responsibilities when it comes to being a 'roll model'...if you are relying on a sports start to be a roll model...you have failed as a parent already :) They have the resposibility to win games...and follow the rule of the game and conduct...that is all.

I think that you missed the point. The point is that crooked refs have been changing the outcome of games.

Can you support that with any proof?

During his career in the NBA, Donaghy officiated in 772 regular-season games and 20 playoff games

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Donaghy

On July 20, 2007, a report of an investigation by the FBI into allegations of an NBA referee betting on games to control the point spread emerged by columnist Murray Weiss of the New York Post.[16] It was later revealed that Donaghy, who has a gambling problem, placed tens of thousands of dollars in bets on games during the 2005-06 NBA season and 2006-07 NBA season and had been approached by lower level mob associates to work on a gambling scheme.[17] Mike Missanelli of the Stephen A. Smith Show suggested that Donaghy had gotten himself into debt and tried to make it up by betting on games.[18]

While the league devotes significant resources to monitoring officials' performance, it only found out about the affair when the FBI stumbled upon Donaghy in the midst of a broader organized crime investigation.[19] NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement, "We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again."[17] Stern was referring to the presumption that games are not fixed.

Donaghy is expected to surrender himself to federal law enforcement officials in New York City before July 28.[20] He is also giving thought to pleading guilty and cooperating with the government in its investigation.[4] In the history of the four major North American professional sports, the only other official who was forced out of his job for suspicion of gambling on games he worked was National League umpire Dick Higham, in 1882.[citation needed]

Sports gambling expert R. J. Bell, president of sports betting information site Pregame.com, tracked every game Donaghy worked from 2003 to 2007. He discovered that during the two seasons investigated by the NBA, the teams involved scored more points than expected by the Las Vegas sports books 57 percent of the time. In the previous two seasons, this only happened 44 percent of the time. According to Bell, the odds of such a discrepancy are 1 in 1,000, and there was "a 99.9 percent chance that these results would not have happened without an outside factor." He also found 10 straight games in 2007 in which Donaghy worked the game and the point spread moved 1.5 points or more before the tip--an indication that big money had been wagered on the game. The big money won every time--another indication that "something (was) going on." However, Bell suggested that there was no way anyone who wasn't in on the fix could have known that something was amiss about Donaghy's actions during a game; he said it would have been another year at the earliest before anyone could have caught on.[21]

In a press conference on July 24, Stern said that the NBA learned about the allegations surrounding Donaghy on June 20. He said that the league would have fired Donaghy immediately, but was advised not to do so. According to Stern, NBA referees are not only barred from betting on games, but can't provide information to anyone about their games or disclose their travel schedules outside their immediate families. Anyone who does so, he said, faces almost certain banishment from the league for life. He emphatically denied that the NBA knew about Donaghy's gambling and let him work anyway. He also called the Donaghy matter "an isolated case involving an NBA referee who engaged not only in a violation of our rules, but in criminal conduct" and "the most serious situation and worst situation that I have ever experienced" in his 40 years with the NBA.[4]

Despite Stern's characterization of Donaghy as a "rogue official," handicapper Brandon Lang told ESPN that it is fairly easy for a crooked sports official to fix a game. According to Lang, an official can directly influence the outcome of a game 75 percent of the time if he has money on the game. For instance, Lang said that a crooked NBA referee can fix the total score by calling enough fouls to get both teams in the bonus. When a game is being fixed, Lang said, the officials should be the prime suspects because the players are making too much money to risk it all. Lang also believes a bookie connected to the mob turned Donaghy in to the FBI.[22]

Danr, thanks for proving that there is no evidence that NBA refs fix games. The article just doesn't support that unfounded allegation.

Donaghy shaved points, that changes the outcome of games. You are playing a silly game of pretending not to understand that for some reason.
