I'm writing a fictional campaign announcement for a speech competition. Its not ready but I thought I would'nt mind getting your thoughts.

My fellow Americans, my name is michael holloway and this is my announcement, to run for the office of the president of the united states. 3 and ½ years of High School Debate and a law degree from Harvard are the things you would find if you searched my name on google, however, my leadership goes beyond what can be found on the internet. I come from a middle class family, worked hard in my life and realized that serving the greatest country of all is my calling, so I enlisted in the US army, and proudly served my country through my work in Military Intelligence. I will always be proud of my service, and proud of all American soldiers protecting our not only our lives, but our republic for which it stands. I will always have faith in God and the American people. That is why my qualities are the perfect candidate for President. The ability to solve issues important to you and the american people is vital to a successful term and I am confident that I can be a person of leadership and value to this great nation. As the President and head of the executive branch, my number one priority is being a successful commander in chief and protecting all Americans from all enemies, foriegn and domestic. The Department of Defense has a budget of 689 billion dollars and the Department of Homeland Security having a 46 billion budget, however, analysts have proved that the finances we have in place are not being adequately and correctly used to complete the missions required. Much of it is wasted and not correctly allocated to the right priorities. That is why in my first 100 days, it is my goal to open a new council under the Defense Cabinet called the Budgetary Reallocation Council, taking experts from military and defense industry and some of our best leaders in finances and budgetary strategy to ensure that the current funding we have are reappropriated on the basis of necessity and priority and how we can reduce unnecessary spending and in turn, reduce taxes. I hope to take a bipartisan approach and come to solutions that are the best for the American people.

You are quite astute for a young man and I love your focus. I was a nuclear missile crewman in the Army in 1977. You would think that a nuclear arsenal would have the absolute finest equipment available. Sadly, under President Carter military budgets were slashed. It was unconscionable the quality of equipment we had to work with. Not only that but I do remember two times that our paychecks were withheld due to the same budget cuts. Talk about a military with a moral problem! I like the way you think, @CoinBlazer !!

My fellow Americans, my name is Michael Holloway and I am running for the Presidency of the United States of America. Three and half years of High School Debate and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard are some of the things that you would find if you did a google search on my name, however, my leadership credentials go far beyond that of a public record search.
Growing up in a middle class family and working to achieve the American dream made me realize that serving the greatest country on earth was my calling. Enlisting in the US Army and proudly serving my country as a Military Intelligence Officer afforded me the opportunity to give back to the country that had given so much to me. I will always have faith in God and the American people. I believe that these qualities and experiences make me the best candidate for President of the United States.
The important issues of our time require men of action and duty and are vital to the success of this great nation. As the President of the United States my number one priority is being a successful Commander-in-Chief and protecting all Americans from all enemies both home and abroad. The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security need the adequate finances and competent leadership to undertake the their respective missions. Under the current Administration, there is too much waste and a lack of critical priorities at all levels. That is why in my first 100 days, I will establish a commission under the Cabinet of Defense called the Budgetary Reallocation Commission, taking experts from the military and the defense industry and some of our best leaders in finance and budgetary strategy to ensure that the current funding levels are appropriate based on military necessities and priorities with the goal of reducing unnecessary spending and thus reducing the onerous tax burden on all Americans. This can be done on a bipartisan approach by working across the aisle to find common sense solutions that benefit all Americans. God bless you and God bless America.

When my sons were in college, they used to apply for scholarships of all kinds. Mostly because few college students take the time to actually apply for this free money and some of the scholarships end up not being granted for lack of applicants. My sons would write the essays and then send them to me for editing. All 3 of them are very good writers for their ages but my wife and I have far more experience writing and we have always given them writing tips. You would be surprised how many scholarships they actually got over the years. You know what the biggest trick was? ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION BEING ASKED. In my work, I read a lot of scholarship applications and it is amazing how many of these kids don't bother reading and answering the question being asked. When you do get to college, apply for every scholarship and answer the essay question that you are being asked not the one you want to answer.

Ah the truth comes to light! @JoeNation is part of the college system that too often turns out little socialist robots who can’t get a job in their chosen field and live in their daddy’s basement. I’ve got a couple examples of that result in my wife’s family.

It’s sad really. A four year education, and end up with jobs they might have gotten straight out of high school. At least they are working.

Sorry, your efforts to pigeonhole your perceived enemies and label them with unsubstantiated, poorly thought out generalizations, once again fails. Who could have guessed that another right-winger was anti-intellectual? Oh yeah, everyone.

I do have to agree that the claims here are unsubstantiated and have no realistic basis. I plan to attend college and I find value in such pursuits,

And I'm sure that you'll do just fine in college wherever you go. A willingness to learn will never be a fool's errand. I would simply say to @JohnHamilton that colleges teach you to think critically and if that turns people into liberals it is because facts have an inherent liberal bias.

If you want simple answers and phony mysticism, skip college and go join a religious cult. The bible-thumping crowd has plenty of both.

I want to get a PoliSci or Law Degree. Those two are the definition of critical thinking.

They are great avenues to a political career. I told my sons that if they wanted to join the military, get your college degree first and then enlist. The pay and the opportunities in the military are both better once you have a degree.

BTW Political Science and Law School aren't mutually exclusive. You can go to Law School with just about any undergraduate degree. Some colleges offer a 3+3 program where you spend 3 years working on your undergrad degree and then your 4th year is both your last year of undergraduate study and your first year of Law School. 6 years for both degrees. I know because I am related to a lot of lawyers.

Wasn't there an old saying something to the effect that if you were not liberal when you were young that you had no heart and if you weren't conservative as an adult that you had no head?

That is a loose quote by John Adams who probably wasn't the first to say it. “If a person is not a liberal when he is twenty, he has no heart; if he is not a conservative when he is forty, he has no head."

Winston Churchill is often quoted as saying it but certainly did not originate it.

I've always felt that if you're not a liberal in your twenties, you turnout to be a life-long asshole. If you aren't more conservative in your forties, you're probably just an old hippie.

Joe, I have yet to see your conservative side. In fact, we have seen very little of your political philosophy except that you hate Trump with vehemence that borders on the pathological.

So if you and the Democrats got control of the White House, House and Senate, what would you do? What would be your priorities?

As for "old hippies," Bernnie Sanders come immediately to mind and since is Elizabeth Warren is 70, she may have been hippie too back in the late 1960s and early '70s.
