....the Greeting is generally "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY", or "HAPPY HOLIDAY", on the solemn remembrance of the reason for the day. Even when I was a young child, it confused me. Maybe it is because I am an Army Brat.
I guess some view Memorial Day as an occasion to remember and celebrate a fallen soldier's life. Others view it as a day to remember and mourn a fallen soldier's death. But most probably just see it as a day off with pay.
A lot of people have unfortunately lost sight of the meaning of Memorial Day. To them, now it means an unofficial kickoff to summer, cookouts, backyard parties, vacations, etc. Now, don’t get me wrong, those are all good and “happy” things but have nothing to do with Memorial Day which should be reserved as a day of respect and remembrance. Some people, thankfully, still regard it as such.
Nowadays, most liberals probably don't even realize there are local parades held to celebrate the sacrifices of others . . . likely because rainbow flags have little reason to fly there.
Just saw your thread charley. I've got to say, the greeting you're referring to really burns my britches. I've been known to correct others when they misrepresent the meaning of Memorial Day through their insensitive mischaracterization of the greeting they use. Unfortunately in my senior years I need to be a bit more selective with my quick to correct approach. It would no longer be a good thing for me to redirect the wrong person. My mind and good intentions can make the purchase while my body can no longer pay the bill if someone were to take it the wrong way.
