I am a firm believer that if I am to pay a tax, the tax should contribute something vital and beneficial to me. I don't believe in taxes for social security, medicare, welfare programs or other methods of socialistic redistribution. I am not here to pay for others government handouts. $16.67 for funding of Social Security, $4 for medicare and 11 dollars for Federal income tax. All on a $250 paycheck for a fast food employee. I don't need a social security payment when I'm 65, I very well don't want to pay $4 for someone else insurance and I know when I become a legal adult, I will most definitely will not enjoy the additional money grabbing of the government. Leave me alone, I don't need you managing my retirement, or my insurance. Taxes should only be enacted for the benefit of me and our society as a whole. And quit the foreign aid!

It's too bad Blazer that so many of our young voters are brainwashed. It's refreshing to see one standing out from the crowd.

Actually, I may be getting a little ahead of myself, as I suspect you're not quite voting age just yet.

I like the part where you think your taxes pay for Social Security and Medicare as if they were entitlement programs. The income taxes you pay DO benefit YOU specifically and directly. If you don't pay into SS or Medicare, you aren't entitled to collect either one. Working for a fast food joint will garner you exactly zero in work benefits like healthcare, paid sick time, holiday pay, and any number of other employer programs. So if you don't want any type of government guaranteed health care, what happens to you when you are hurt in a car accident and need emergency medical care? Oh yeah, they wheel you out the backdoor and shove you into the parking lot because you have no healthcare coverage or they treat you and pass the costs onto the rest of us. Wish I could be there.

You are a kid. You have been supported by your parent your entire life. You have been the recipient of the oldest form of socialism known to man, mommy and daddy. Wait until mommy and daddy get tired of supporting your ass and you have to make it out in the world on a fast food job or some other service industry dead-end job with no benefits. Your youthful idealism will crash headlong into stark reality and again, I wish I could be there.

The things you think you know are absolutely hilarious. Life is an education. You haven't left the kindergarten stage of life yet.

I don't need medicare or SS, currently my parents have private healthcare, something you would love to steal from them. Hurt in a car accident? yeah I know, I was just in one a few hours ago. I didnt need SS, medicare to save me!

When I wrote my welcome post, I hadn't yet read this thread. You're an articulate young man, CoinBlazer, and I estimate that your intelligence is above average. I think you'll manage to figure things out as your life experience grows, and will probably leave the myopic libertarian view behind, just as I did. Please drive carefully; the world can't afford to lose people who actually think. Cheers!

Hey Coinblazer. You are thinking far ahead of what was on my mind at seventeen and I applaud you for it. You will soon have the power to change your world with your ability to vote. I am sure you will wield that power intelligently.

Don’t buy into the government guaranteed health care line. There is no such thing. Only a government imposed penalty for not having it.

As far as Medicare and Social Security.... Well these are so deeply ingrained in our nations fabric that it would take generations to unravel it. Like yourself, I believe I could have used my earnings far more efficiently for retirement myself. However now at this point I have contributed to these programs some forty-odd years and now they do both play into my retirement plans. So it is of great interest to me and to those of my generation that they remain viable.

Thing is, folks will get down on their luck sometimes. It used to be that government assistance programs were looked upon as almost shameful. There are legitimate reasons to help a man up when he is down. Unfortunately we have groomed a generation that feels somewhat entitled to making their living on these programs. It is a mindset that needs to be addressed more-so than the programs themselves.

Again, I applaud you for having the foresight at your age to recognize there are problems that must be addressed.

@CoinBlazer, perhaps you should look at the conditions during the Panic of 1837. That was the worst economic depression of the 19th century. People starved and froze to death when they lost their jobs and their homes. There was no “safety net” as we know it today. All of the public assistance came from churches and private individuals. It wasn’t enough. Fortunately many more people lived on farms then and were able to survive.

You might yearn for those times, but be careful what you wish for. Revolutions like the ones in France in the late 18th century and Russia in 1917 were fermented because of conditions like the Panic 1837. The United States had growing Communist and Fascist movements in the early 1930s.

The “preserve domestic tranquility” clause in the preamble to the constitution covers the sorts of things that you oppose. I’ll grant you that some on the left have taken and want to take things too far, but the radial hard right “root hog or die” approach is not going to preserve your way of life. In fact it might be quite the opposite.
